Այդպիսի իրավիճակում փրկության բանալին շնչառությունը ճիշտ վերահսկելու մեջ է: Թթթվածնով լիքը թոքերով մարդու մարմինը թեթև է լինում ու մնում է ջրի մակերեսին: Այդ իսկ պատճառով անհրաժեշտ է խորը շնչել ու կարճ արտաշնչել: Քաղցրահամ ջրերում ջրի մակերեսին մնալը շատ դժվար է, բայց հնարավոր: Խուճապը, որը բերում է շնչառության արագացմանը, փրկվողի առաջին թշնամին է: Մարմնի դիրքը ևս կարող է բարդացնել շնչառությունը, սակայն դիրքը փոխելը շատ հեշտ է: Եթե խորությունը մեծ չէ, օգտագործեք սուզվելու և հետո ցատկելու հնարքը՝ դեպի ափ շարժվելու համար:
Եթե մարտիկը փորի վրա է լողում, նրան պետք է մեջքի հատվածում ճկվել, որպեսզի գլուխը բարձրանա ջրի մակերեսից: Ալեկոծ ծովում դա կարող է դժվար ստացվել: Նման իրավիճակում ամբողջ մարմնով շրջվելը թույլ կտա խորը շնչել և շարունակել դեպի ափ շարժվել»:
