Ավստրալիայի վարչապետ Մալքոլմ Թյորնբուլը հրապարակայնորեն կողմ է արտահայտվել երկրում հանրապետական կարգի ներդրմանը: Նրա կարծիքով՝ այդ մասին որոշում պետք է կայացվի ճիշտ ժամանակին: Այս մասին գրում է ՌԻԱ Նովոստին՝ վկայակոչելով ABC-ն:

Ավստրալիայի հանրապետական շարժման համագումարում ունեցած ելույթում վարչապետը հայտարարել է, որ Ավստրալիան կարող է հանրապետություն դառնալ:

«Մենք այլ շարժառիթ չունենք՝ երկրի հանդեպ սիրուց բացի: Եվ մենք ասում ենք ինքներս մեզ, որ միասնական ենք եւ ավստրալացիներ ենք, եւ մեր պետության ղեկավարը պետք է մեզանից մեկը լինի»,- ասել է Թյորնբուլը:

Նա, միաժամանակ, հավելել է, որ հարկավոր է սպասել Մեծ Բրիտանիայի Եղիսաբեթ 2-րդ թագուհու գահակալության ավարտին, ինչպես նաեւ հասարակության աջակցությունը ստանալ:

Վարչապետի հայտարարությունը քննադատության է ենթարկվել նրա որոշ քաղաքական ընդդիմախոսների, այդ թվում՝ լիբերալների կողմից: Թյորնբուլին զգուշացրել են նրա «քաղաքական մահվան» մասին, եթե նա շարունակի բարձրացնել Ավստրալիան հանրապետության վերածելու թեման:
