Գաղտնիք չէ, որ մաստակը կազմված է սինթետիկայից: Մաստակի հիմքը՝ լատեքսը, թեեւ ճանաչվում է անվնաս, սակայն մինչեւ որոշակի սահմանը: Շաքարի փոխարինիչները և համանյութերը, որոնք բնական եւ նույնական են դրանց, կատարյալ չեն:
Վերցնենք թեկուզև մեկ շաքարի փոխարինիչ՝ ասպարտամը (E951), որն առկա է գրեթե բոլոր էժանագին գազավորված ըմպելիքների և մաստակների մեջ: Ընդ որում, ասպարտամը կարող ենք համարձակորեն անվանել կենսաբանական զենք: Բացի իր քաղցր համից, ասպարտամը հանդիսանում է ֆենիլալանինի աղբյուր: Վերջինս մարդու օրգանիզմում խախտում է հորմոնալ հավասարակշռությունը, ինչը հատկապես վնասակար է երեխաներին, հղի կանանց, քաշի ավելցուկ ունեցողներին, շաքարախտով հիվանդներին և նյութափոխանակության այլ խանգարումներ ունեցողներին: Ֆենիլալանինը կարող է տարիներ շարունակ կուտակվել օրգանիզմում, որից հետո միայն հանգեցնել հիվանդության: ԱՄՆ-ում կատարված բազմաթիվ փորձերը ցույց են տվել վերջինիս քաղցկեղածին ազդեցությունը, այդ իսկ պատճառով էլ հենց ԱՄՆ-ում էլ արգելվել է ասպարտամի օգտագործումը:
Թեպետ շաքարի փոխարինիչներում դրանք այդքան էլ շատ չեն, վերամշակումից կամ սինթեզից հետո “աղբ” է մնում:
Եթե մաստակի փաթեթավորման վրա նշված է E171 ցուցիչը, ապա սա այսպես կոչված տիտանի երկօքսիդ է: Այդ նյութն առկա է ամենահայտնի արտադրողների մաստակներում: Երեխաների համար ամենագրավիչ նկարներով և պիտակներով մաստակները իրականում թույն էին հանդիսանում՝ արտադրելով թունավոր ստիրոլ:
