 Եվրախորհրդարանի ղեկավար սոցիալ-դեմոկրատ Մարտին Շուլցն իր կուսակիցներին հասկանալ Է տվել, որ նրանք չպետք Է հույսեր կապեն իր հետ որպես 2017 թվականի խորհրդարանական ընտրություններում Գերմանիայի կանցլերի թեկնածուի: Այդ մասին, ինչպես տեղեկացնում Է«Արմենպրես»-ը, հայտնել Է Der Spiegel հանդեսը: 
Այսպիսով, որոշումը, թե Գերմանիայի սոցիալ-դեմոկրատական կուսակցությունից ով կդառնա կանցլերի թեկնածուն, ըստ Էության, կախված կլինի ԳՍԴԿ-ի ղեկավար Զիգմար Գաբրիելից: Կուսակցության շատ անդամներ վստահ Էին, որ Եվրախորհրդարանի ներկայիս ղեկավարը Անգելա Մերկելի արժանի մրցակիցը կդառնա կանցլերի պաշտոնի համար մրցավազքում, ուստի փորձում Էին համոզել Շուլցին բացահայտորեն հայտարարել թեկնածու դառնալու պատրաստակամության մասին: Դրանով իսկ նա կհասներ այն բանին, որ այդ հարցի շուրջ քվեարկեին ԳՍԴԿ-ի անդամները: 
Ավելի վաղ Գաբրիելը, որը, որպես կուսակցության առաջնորդ, ԳՍԴԿ-ից կանցլերի «բնական» թեկնածու Է, հայտարարել Է, որ մի քանի հավակնորդների առկայության դեպքում կանցկացնի նախնական ընտրություններ: Շուլցն այդ դեպքում ակնհայտ ֆավորիտ կլիներ: Հրատարակության տվյալներով՝ ակներեւ Է, որ Եվրախորհրդարանի ղեկավարը երկյուղել Է առաջադրել իր թեկնածությոնը եւ բացահայտ պայքարի մեջ մտնել Գաբրիելի հետ: 
ԳՍԴԿ-ն պաշտոնապես իր թեկնածուի անունը կհայտարարի հունվարի երկրորդ կեսին: Գերմանիայում Բունդեսթագի ընտրությունները նշանակված են հաջորդ տարվա աշնանը: Ավելի վաղ Գերմանիայի կանցլեր Անգելա Մերկելը (Քրիստոնեադեմոկրատական միություն) հայտարարել Է չորրորդ ժամկետով իր թեկնածությունն առաջադրելու պատրաստակամության մասին, հաղորդել Է ՏԱՍՍ-ը:
