1917թ. ապրիլի 2-ին Կոնգրեսի առաջ հիմնավորելով Գերմանիային պատերազմ հայտարարելու խնդրանքը՝ Վուդրո Վիլսոնն իր նախագահության օրոք արտաբերեց ամենաաղմկալի ասույթներից մեկը. «Աշխարհը պետք է անվտանգ դարձնել ժողովրդավարության համար»: Հաջորդ սերնդի ժամանակ Ֆրանկլին Դ. Ռուզվելտը և Ուինսթոն Չերչիլը հրապարակեցին Ատլանտյան խարտիան, որը Երկրորդ աշխարհամարտի ժամանակ դաշնակից երկրներին պարտավորեցնում էր պաշտպանել ժողովուրդների իրավունքը՝ ընտրելու կառավարման այնպիսի ձև, որի ներքո նրանք ցանկանում են ապրել: Այդ ժամանակից ի վեր ԱՄՆ-ը պնդում է, որ Ամերիկայի ազգային անվտանգությունը կախված է արտասահմանում ժողովրդավարության և մարդու իրավունքների տարածումից՝ գրում է Ջեյմս Տրաուբը Foreign Policy-ում:
Բայց Դոնալդ Թրամփը, որը ստանձնում է նախագահի պաշտոնը Վիլսոնի ելույթից 100 տարի անց, կարող է դառնալ Ամերիկայի պատմության մեջ առաջին նախագահը, որը չի կիսում այդ համոզմունքները՝ կարծում է հոդվածագիրը:
Նորընտիր նախագահի հարձակումները լրագրության, քննադատների և քաղաքական հակառակորդների վրա հստակ ցույց են տալիս, թե ինչքան է նա ատում ժողովրդավարական նորմերը: Նա նաև արհամարհում է միջազգային իրավունքի այնպիսի սկզբունքներ, ինչպիսիք են փախստականներին ընդունելու պարտավորվածությունը կամ կտտանքներից զերծ մնալը: Արտասահմանում ժողովրդավարական նորմերը նրան ամենաքիչն են հետաքրքրում: Համաշխարհային առաջնորդները, որոնց նա գովում է, այդ թվում՝ Վլադիմիր Պուտինը, Ռեջեփ Թայիփ Էրդողանը և Աբդել Ֆաթահ Ալ-Սիսին, բռնապետներ են, որոնք իրենց քննադատողներին ուղարկում են բանտ կամ գերեզմանոց՝ փաստում է Տրաուբը:
Ինչո՞ւ է ԱՄՆ-ը ցանկանում աշխարհն անվտանգ դարձնել ժողովրդավարության համար: Վիլսոնը կարծում էր, որ ավտոկրատ կառավարությունները, որոնց գործողությունները ղեկավարում են առաջնորդների եսասեր շահերը, այլ ոչ թե քաղաքացիների ցանկությունը, կոչնչացնեն «խաղաղության համաձայնագիր» սերմանելու ջանքերը:
Եթե ԱՄՆ-ը չղեկավարի ժողովրդավարական և լիբերալ սկզբունքների առաջխաղացումը, ինչպես արել են վերջին 100 տարիների ընթացքում, ոչ մեկը չի անի: Եվ այդ վակուումը կլցվի այն մեկով, որի արժեքները ո՛չ ժողովրդավարական են, ո՛չ լիբերալ: Ամերիկան կրկին հզոր դարձնելու Թրամփի խոստումը կվերածվի տրագիֆարսի՝ եզրափակում է հոդվածագիրը:
