Երբ Մեծ Բրիտանիայի վարչապետ Թերեզա Մեյը վերջապես հանդիպեց ԱՄՆ նախագահ Դոնալդ Թրամփի հետ անցած շաբաթ, նրա հղած հիմնական ուղերձը հետեւյալն էր.«Զգուշացե՛ք Վլադիմիր Պուտինից», գրում է Foreign Policy պարբերականը։

Սա, համաձայն հոդվածի, մի կողմից արտացոլում է պաշտոնական Լոնդոնի մտահոգությունը առ այն, որ Թրամփը վստահում է Արեւմուտքի տերությունների միջեւ սեպ խրելու եւ պատմության երբեմնի ամենահզոր ռազմական դաշինքը խարխլելու փորձեր անող մարդուն, մյուս կողմից արտացոլում է ԱՄՆ–ի տրանսատլանտյան խորհրդատուի դերը ստանձնելու եւ ԵՄ–ից առաջիկայում դուրս գալու վերջնական քայլն անող Բրիտանիայի՝ Վաշինգթոնի հետ հարաբերություններին նոր շունչ հաղորդելու փորձերը։

Այս մերձեցմանը դեմ են ոչ միայն Բրիտանիայի հասարակության մի զգալի հատվածը, այլեւ Լոնդոնի դաշնակիցները Եվրոպայում, որոնք համարում են, թե Բրիտանիան կրկին վերադառնում է Չերչիլի որդեգրած քաղաքականությանը, որը համոզված էր, թե հարաբերությունները Միացյալ Նահանգների հետ պետք է գերակա լինեն Եվրամիության հետ հարաբերությունների նկատմամբ։

Այս կապակցությամբ եվրոպացի փորձագետներից մեկը վկայակոչում է Մերձավոր Արեւելքի հակամարտության հարցով ՄԱԿ բանաձեւի վերաբերյալ պաշտոնական Լոնդոնի դիրքորոշումը, որը նախ պաշտպանեց խնդրի շուրջ եվրոպական տեսակետը, ապա սկսեց կիսել Թրամփի դիրքորոշումը։

«Լոնդոնի այս քայլերը նշանավորեցին համաձայնեցված դիրքորոշմամբ հանդես գալու փորձ անող եվրոպացիների միջեւ խորը ճեղքը։ Որոշ եվրոպական պետություններ իրենց մտահոգությունը հայտնեցին այն կապակցությամբ, որ Բրիտանիան ծառայում է որպես շղարշ ԱՄՆ–ի նոր վարչախմբի համար»,– ասված է հոդվածում։
