Այս օրինակում մեր տեսադաշտի հիմնական մասը դատարկ է. առկա է պարզապես սև տարածություն վրա սպիտակ գույնի X նշան: Ուղեղը փորձում է ինֆորմացիա ստանալ մեր տեսադաշտի հիմնական մասից դուրս գտնվող հատվածներից, տվյալ պարագայում՝ աջ և ձախ կողմում տեղադրված նկարներից: Այս ինֆորմացիայի աղբյուրները այսպես ասած “վստահելի” չեն, և ուղեղը փորձում է դրանք միավորել մեկ պատկերի մեջ: Բացի այդ, այն փորձում է վերլուծել նկարները չափազանց կարճ ժամանակահատվածում, քանի որ դրանք անընդհատ փոխվում են: Այսպիսով դեմքերը տարբերակելու կարողությունը չեզոքանում է. մեր ուղեղը միավորում է դեմքերից տարբեր հատվածներ մեկ պատկերի մեջ, և մենք տեսնում ենք “հրեշների”:
