Այսօր Սթունհենջը համարվում է Մեծ Բրիտանիայի կարևորագույն հուշարձաններից մեկը: Բայց քչերը գիտեն, որ ընդամնեը 100 տարի առաջ այն աճուրդով հանվել էր վաճառքի: 

Սոլսբերի հարթավայրում գտնվող քարե այս կառույցը ներկայումս ընդգրկված է ՅՈՒՆԵՍԿՕ-ի համաշխարհային ժառանգության ցանկում և տարեկան հազարավոր զբոսաշրջիկների է հյուրընկալում իր մոտ: Այդ իսկ պատճառով է տարօրինակ է կարծել, որ Անգլիայի նշանավոր հուշարձանը ինչ որ ժամանակ գնվել է մի փաստաբանի կողմից: Ավելին՝ դրա գնորդը այն նվիրել է իր կնոջը, ում այդքան էլ դուր չի եկել այն: Սա առավել ծանրակշիռ վարկածներից մեկն է: Մեկ այլ վարկածի համաձայն՝ նա դա գնել է, որպեսզի օտարերկրացիները չկարողանան այն ձեռք բերել:
Անկախ շարժիչ ուժից՝ 101 տարի առաջ, 1915 թ․-ի սեպտեմբերի 21-ին, միլիոնատեր Սեսիլ Չաբբը, Սոլսբերիի աճուրդում 6,6 հազար ֆունտ ստերլինգ վճարեց հուշարձանի համար և դարձավ դրա սեփականատերը:
 
Սեսիլի կինը՝ Մերին, չգնահատեց ամուսնու հայրենասիրությունն ու ռոմանտիզմը գուցե այն պատճառով, որ նվերի գինն այնքան էլ մեծ չէր: Այսօրվա դրությամբ այն կազմում էր 680 հազար ֆունտ ստերլինգ (մոտ 1 միլիոն դոլար): 
Սթունհենջի ներկայիս կառավարչի Հիզեր Սեյբարի խոսքերով՝ Մերին գնացել էր աճուրդին, որպեսզի վարագույների հավաքածու ձեռք բերեր, բայց ամուսինը լրիվ այլ բան էր գնել: 
Լուսանկարում նրանք են․

1918 թ․-ի հոկտեմբերի 26-ին, Առաջին Համաշխարհային պատերազմին վերջ դրած Կոմպիենի զինադադարից 16 օր առաջ, Սեսիլ Չաբբը որոշեց Սթոունհենջը փոխանցել հասարակությանը, ինչի մասին վկայում են այս փաստաթղթերը:

Մեկ տարի անց, առատաձեռն բրիտանացին կառավարության կողմից պարգևատրվեց «սըր» տիտղոսով և դարձավ Սթոունհենջի առաջին բարոնը:
