Սիրիական Պալմիրա հուշարձանին հասցված վնասները այդքան նշանակալի չեն, որքան «Իսլամական պետություն» ահաբեկչական խմբավորման կողմից վնաս էր հասցվել առաջին անգամ քաղաքի գրավման ժամանակ: Այս մասին «ՌԻԱ Նովոստի»-ին տեղեկացրել է Սիրիայի Հնությունների և թանգարանների դեպարտամենտի գլխավոր տնօրեն  Մամուն Աբդուլքարիմը:

Ինչպես նշել է Աբդուլքարիմը, իր տրամադրության տակ գտնվող լուսանկարներն ու տեսանյութերը վկայում են այն մասին, որ Պալմիրային հասցված վնասն այնքան մեծ չէ, ինչպես ենթադրվում էր:

«Մենք սպասում էինք, որ ամեն ինչ վատ է լինելու: Կարծում ենք, որ հնարավորություն է ստեղծված այնտեղ սկսած աշխատանքն ավարտին հասցնելու համար»,-ասել է նա:

Նրա փոխանցմամբ, նախնական տվյալներով կարելի է ասել միայն, որ հնագույն ամֆիթատրոնի դիմային մասն է վնասվել, ինչպես նաև Տետրապիլոն ճարտարապետական համալիրի սյուները: Ընդհանուր առմամբ, ամֆիթատրոնը լավ վիճակում է, Ագորա առևտրային հրապարակը` նույնպես: Առաջիկա երկու օրերին մասնագետների թիմը կմեկնի Պալմիրա և տեղում կսկսի ուսումնասիրությունները, այդ ժամանակ ավելի հստակ պարզ կլինեն վնասի չափերը:

Սիրիայի կառավարական ուժերը ռուսաստանյան ռազմաօդային ուժերի աջակցությամբ մարտի 3-ին ավարտել ենՊալմիրայի ազատագրման օպերացիան: Սիրիայի պետական SANA գործակալությունը հաղորդել էր, որ բանակը մտելէ Պալմիրայի պատմական մասը, Իսլամական պետության զինյալները հեռանում են քաղաքից։ 

Սիրիական բանակն առաջին անգամ Պալմիրան ազատագրել էր անցյալ տարվա մարտին: Քաղաքի գրավման տասնամիսներին իսլամիստները ոչնչացրել էին բազմաթիվ մշակութային հուշարձաններ, սպանել հարյուրավոր մարդկանց։ 2016թ․ դեկտեմբերին Պալմիրան կրկին անցավ ԻՊ-ի վերահսկողության տակ:
