«168 ժամ» թերթը գրում է. «Ղարաբաղյան հակամարտության գոտում Ռուսաստանը տարօրինակ դրության մեջ է հայտնվել։ Լինելով ամենաազդեցիկ արտաքին ուժը, գլխավոր բանակցողն ու շահագրգիռ կողմը՝ Ռուսաստանը սպառազինություն է վաճառում հակամարտող կողմերին՝ դրանով իսկ ակտիվ պահելով հակամարտությունը։ Սակայն կան նաև տարբեր ռուսական շահեր։ Ես կասեի, որ ռուսական անվտանգության և ռազմական մարմինները հետաքրքրված են ստատուս-քվոյի և Հայաստանի ու Ադրբեջանի միջև հավասարակշռության պահպանման հարցում։

Մյուսները, ինչպիսին բիզնես էլիտան և արտաքին գործերի նախարար Սերգեյ Լավրովն է, հակամարտության կարգավորման հնարավորություններ են տեսնում՝ հավատալով, որ խաղաղ կարգավորում կարող է ձեռք բերվել, ինչը կընդլայնի Ռուսաստանի ազդեցությունը տարածաշրջանում՝ բացելով կոմունիկացիոն կապերը»,- «168 ժամ»-ի թղթակցի հետ զրույցում այս մասին  ասել է «Կարնեգի Եվրոպա» հիմնադրամի ավագ հետազոտող, եվրոպացի փորձագետ, բրիտանացի լրագրող Թոմաս դե Վաալը՝ անդրադառնալով ԼՂ հակամարտության գոտում տիրող իրավիճակին և ռուսական շահերին։

Նրա կարծիքով՝ ռուսական գործոնի գլխավոր պարադոքսն այն է, որ Ռուսաստանն ընդլայնում է հակամարտության բռնկման հավանականությունը՝ վաճառելով սպառազինություն երկու կողմերին, սակայն չունի շահ նոր հակամարտության բռնկման մեջ։ «Կարճ ասած, չափազանց շատ են ռուսական շահերը միայնակ հակամարտության կարգավորումն ապահովելու նպատակով։ Մյուս միջազգային խաղացողներն անպայմանորեն պետք է ներգրավվեն»,- ասել է դե Վաալը»:
