Սիմոն Ռիբերոն նշել է, որ գիտնականներն ավելի վաղ պարզել էին, որ ակնեից տառապող մարդկանց մաշկն ավելի դանդաղ է ծերանում, քան իդեալական, խնդիրներ չունեցող մաշկը. մասնավորապես, ակնեով մարդկանց մոտ զգալիորեն ավելի ուշ են կնճիռներ հայտնվում:
Նոր հետազոտությանը երկվորյակ կանանց 1205 զույգ է մասնակցել, որոնց մեկ քառորդը պզուկներ է ունեցել: Հեղինակները պարզել են, որ նրանք, ովքեր ակնեով են տառապել, ավելի երկար տելոմերներ են ունեցել: Տելոմերները տեղադրված են քրոմոսոմների վերջում եւ տարիքի հետ դրանք կարճանում են: Ենթադրվում է, որ առավել երկար տելոմերներով մարդիկ ավելի դանդաղ են ծերանում, քան նրանք, ում մոտ դրանք կարճացած են: Շատ գիտնականներ այսօր աշխատում են տելոմերների կարճացումը դանդաղեցնելու միջոցների վրա, ինչը տեսականորեն կարող է կանգնեցնել ծերացումը:
Գիտնականները նաեւ հայտնաբերել են գեներից մեկը, որը վերահսկել է եւ տելոմերների երկարությունը, եւ պզուկների ի հայտ գալը: Նրանք ցույց են տվել, որ ակնեով տառապող մարդկանց մոտ դանդաղած է եղել P53 ազդանշանային ուղու ակտիվությունը, որը գործարկվում է ապոպտոզի գործընթացում: Հենց ապոպտոզի, այսինքն` բջիջների ծրագրված մահացության հետեւանքով է տեղի ունենում տելոմերների կարճացումը:
