Չիայի սերմերի գոյության մասին հայտնի է դեռևս հնագույն ժամանակներից, որոնք օգտագործվում էին կրոնական ու ծիսական տարբեր առիթներով, ինչպես նաև հիվանդությունների բուժման համար։
