Տարածված կարծիքի համաձայն՝ չիլի կարմիր պղպեղի մեծ քանակով օգտագործումը կյանքի տեւողությունը կարող է ավելացնել: Վերջերս կատարված հետազոտություններից մեկի համաձայն՝ կծու պղպեղի օգտագործումը իր երկրպագուների շրջանում մահացությունը նվազեցնում է ամբողջ 13 տոկոսով: Բնականաբար, պղպեղն իրենց սննդակարգում կարող են ներառել միայն նրանք, ովքեր դրա համար լուրջ հակացուցումներ չունեն:
