Ճանաչողական նեյրոգիտության ամենատարօրինակ ու հետաքրքիր երևույթներից մեկը, որ հազվադեպ է հանդիպում, կոչվում է «կուրատեսություն». մարդիկ կույր են, բայց իրենց ուղեղը ենթագիտակցական մակարդակում կարողանում է զգալ շրջակայքում գտնվող իրերն ու մարդկանց։
Շոտլանդացի մի կին՝ Միլինա Կյունինգ անունով, կորցրել է տեսողությունն իր պատանեկության տարիներին, և ավելի ուշ հասկացել է, որ ունի այս հետաքրքիր կարողությունը։ Նրա հետ գիտնականները բազմաթիվ հետազոտություններ են իրականացրել։ Կյունինգի ուղեղն ուսումնասիրած գիտնական Ջոդի Կուլհամն ասում է, որ երբ պինգ-պոնգի գնդակը նետում էին Միլինայի ուղղությամբ, նա բարձրացնում էր ձեռքն ու պաշտպանվում՝ գնդակը մի կողմ հրելով, մինչդեռ նրան ոչ մեկը տեղյակ չէր պահել դրա մասին։
Միլինան ինքն իր զգացողություններն այսպես է նկարագրում.
Երբ ինձ տարան հիվանդանոց, ես տեսնում էի, կույր չէի։ Ինձ արհեստական կոմայի մեջ գցեցին՝ առողջական խնդիրներիս պատճառով։ 52 օր մնացել եմ կոմայի մեջ։ Իսկ երբ արթնացա, ոչինչ չէի տեսնում։ Ինձ ասացին, որ մինչ կոմայի մեջ եմ եղել, կաթված եմ ստացել, ինչն էլ ինձ կուրացրել է։
Ամիսներ անց, սակայն, որոշ փոփոխություններ զգացի։ 6 ամիս անց ինձ թվում էր, թե ինչ-որ գույն եմ տեսնում, բայց ոչ մեկը չէր հավատում։ Երբ ինձ տարան նյարդաբան Գորդոն Դաթոնի հետ հանդիպման, նա միանգամից գլխի ընկավ՝ ինչի մասին է խոսքը, ու պնդեց, որ ինձ մոտ կուրատեսություն է։
Երբ գնացի Դաթոնի մոտ, նա ընդամենը մի քանի առաջադրանք տվեց։ Սկզբում նա մի քանի աթոռ տեղադրեց հիվանդանոցի միջանցքում և խնդրեց ինձ անցնել դրանց մոտով՝ ասելով, որ քայլեմ իմ սովորական հետագծով։ Ես այդպես էլ արեցի՝ բախվելով աթոռներին։ Հետո ես պետք է փորձեի քայլել մի փոքր ավելի արագ, բայց շրջանցելով աթոռները։ Ինձ հաջողվեց անել ճիշտ այդպես. առանց որևէ աթոռի հարվածելու՝ ես հասա միջանցքի մյուս ծայրը։ Դա այնքա˜ն տպավորիչ էր։
Դաթոնն ասում էր, որ չմտածեմ դրա մասին, չկենտրոնանամ դրա վրա, իմ ենթագիտակցականն էր, որ օգնեց ինձ կատարել առաջադրանքը՝ խուսափելով աթոռներին հարվածելուց։
Ես կարողանում եմ քայլել տնով ու կարգի բերել այն՝ վերցնելով գետնին ընկած իրերը։ Իհարկե, ես չեմ տեսնում դրանք, բայց ես գիտեմ, որ դրանք այնտեղ են՝ գետնին։ Իմ ուղեղն է ասում ինձ։
Ես փորձում եմ տեսնել Ձեզ. ես գիտեմ, որ Դուք նստած եք այդտեղ՝ իմ դիմաց, շատ մոտ, բայց, միևնույն է, ես չեմ տեսնում Ձեզ։
Տարօրինակ զգացողություն է, որ ես չպետք է տեսնեմ այդ ամենը, որովհետև ես կույր եմ, բայց ես, կարելի է ասել, տեսնում եմ։
