Ինչ էր կտակել Սարոյանը մահվանից առաջ

«Կյանքիդ ժամերն ապրիր այնպես, որ այդ քաղցր ժամերին ոչ քեզ, ոչ էլ կողքիդ ապրողներին չդիպչեն ապականությունն ու մահը: Ամենուրեք փնտրիր բարին ու հենց հայտնաբերես, հանիր լույս աշխարհ իր թաքստոցից, թող բարությունը լինի անկաշկանդ և չամաչի ինքն իրենից...»,- այս խոսքերը մեծանուն գրող Վիլյամ Սարոյանի «Քո կյանքի ժամերը» պիեսից են, որի համար նա արժանացել է Նյու Յորքի քննադատների և Պուլիցերյան մրցանակների:
Սարոյանը, սակայն հրաժարվել է 10 հազար դոլար մրցանակից՝ պատճառաբանելով, որ պետությունը չպիտի խառնվի գրականության գործերին:
«Թեև գրում եմ անգլերեն և ծնունդով ամերիկացի եմ, բայց ես ինձ համարում եմ հայ գրող: Լեզուն, որով գրում եմ, անգլերենն է, միջավայրը, որ նկարագրում եմ, ամերիկյան է, իսկ ոգին, որ ինձ մղում է գրելու, հայկական է: Ուրեմն ես հայ գրող եմ և պատկանում եմ հայ գրողների ընտանիքին»,- իր մասին ասել է Սարոյանը:
Սարոյանը պատմվածքի ժանրը հարստացրել է սոցիալ-հոգեբանական նոր թեմատիկայով, մարդու, մարդկայինի, բարոյականության մասին թարմ ասելիքով: Նրա հերոսներից շատերը հայեր են, որոնք ներկայացնում են հայկական միջավայրը՝ ազգային սովորույթներով ու բարքերով, հայրենիքի պատմական հիշողությամբ:
Սարոյանի առավել ճանաչված գործերից են «Իմ սիրտը լեռներում է», «Կյանքիդ ժամանակը», «Հե՛յ, ո՞վ կա այդտեղ», «Կոտորածն մանկանց», «Խաղողի այգին», «Մի գավաթ բարություն» դրամաները:
Արձակագիր, դրամատուրգ Անուշ Ասլիբեկյանի կարծիքով` Սարոյանը կարող է դառնալ ցանկացած ազգի հոգևոր ու մշակութային մաքրագործման, վեհացման խորհրդանիշ. «Սակայն, այս գիտակցումը դեռ ամրագրված չէ մեր մեջ, մեր հասարակությունը լիովին չի արժևորում կամ չի կարևորում Սարոյանի բացառիկ երևույթ լինելը ոչ միայն հայ ազգի մշակութային համատեքստում, այլև՝ համաշխարհային գրականության»:
Մահից առաջ կտակել է, որ իր աճյունի մի մասը թաղվի հայրենի հողում: Գրողը մահացել է Ֆրեզնոյում, նրա աճյունի մի մասը թաղված է Կոմիտասի անվան պանթեոնում:
