17 –ամյա Ջեսիկա Սանթիլլանը մահացել է այն բանից հետո, երբ նրան պատվաստել են սիրտ և թոքեր։ Բանն այն է, որ պատվաստված օրգանների արյան խումբը չէր համընկնում աղջկա արյան խմբի հետ։ Երբ բժիշկները փորձլ են երկրորդ վիրահատությամբ շտկել սխալը, վնասվել է աղջկը ուղեղը, իսկ հետվիրահատական բարդություններ հետևանքով աղջիկը ապրել է ընդամենը 2 շաբաթ, ինչից հետո մահացել է։

Սա, ամենայն հավանականությամբ, ամենահայտնի բժշկական սխալն է։ 1995 թվականին Ֆլորիդա նահանգի վիրաբույժներից մեկը սխալմամբ հեռացնում է իր հիվանդի առողջ ոտքը՝ անդամահատման վիրահատության ընթացքում։ Հետագայում պարզվել է, որ մի շարք բժշկական սխալներ հանգեցրել են ամնեագլխավոր սխալին։ Բժիշկները վիրահատության կեսից հասկացել են, որ սխալ ոտք են հեռացնում, սակայն ոտքը փրկելն այլևս անհնար է եղել։ Վիրահատությունից հետո սխալը թույլ տված բժիշկը զրկվել է լիցենզիայից 6 ամիս ժամկետով և տուգանվել $10.000 դոլարով։ Հիվանդանոցը, որտեղ անցկացվել է վիրահատությունը, տուժածին $900.000 դոլար փխհատուցում է վճարել։ Գումար տալուց չի խուսափել նաև բժիշկը, ով վճարել է $250.000 դոլար։
