Կերակրի աղը համարվում է առողջության համար ոչ այնքան օգտակար մթերք: Աղի չարաշահումը կարող է առաջացնել բարձր զարկերակային ճնշում, սրտանոթային հիվանդություններ և նույնիսկ աուտոիմունային խանգարումներ: Այնուամենայնիվ, Cell Metabolism գիտական ամսագրում վերջերս տպագրված մի հոդվածում հաղորդվում է այն մասին, որ աղը կարող է օգտակար լինել իմունային համակարգի համար: Հայտնի է, որ աղ շատ օգտագործելիս (իսկ մկների պարագայում՝ նույնիսկ քիչ քանակություն օգտագործելիս) այն կուտակվում է մաշկի շարակցական հյուսվածքում: Միևնույն ժամանակ՝ մաշկը հանդիսանում է վարակների դեմ պաշտպանության առաջին գիծը: Ուստի հարց է առաջանում՝ արդյոք աղը կարևոր չէ՞ մաշկային իմունիտետի համար: Ենթադրությունը ստուգելու համար հետազոտողները մկների մակրոֆագերը (իմունային համակարգի բջիջների տարատեսակ) աճեցրեցին աղի տարբեր կոնցենտրացիաներով սննդամիջավայրերում: Մակրոֆագերը պաթոգենների դեմ պայքարի մեջ մտնող կարևոր բջիջներ են, որոնք խժռում են օրգանիզմ ներթափանցած մանրէներին: Պարզվեց՝ այն սննդամիջավայրում, որում աղի քանակությունը համապատասխանում էր մաշկում աղի բնական կոնցենտրացիային, մակրոֆագերն ավելի ակտիվ էին: Այնուհետև հետազոտողները փորձերը շարունակեցին կենդանի մկների հետ: Առաջին խմբի մկներին կերակրում էին աղով աղքատ, իսկ երկրորդ խմբի մկներին՝ աղով հարուստ սննդակարգով: Երկու շաբաթ անց մկներին վարակեցին լեյշմանիոզով՝ հիվանդության հարուցչին ներարկելով թաթերի բարձիկների մաշկի միջով: Երկրորդ խմբի մկների մոտ մաշկի բորբոքված տեղամասն ավելի շուտ էր ապաքինվում, իսկ մակաբույծների քանակությունն ավելի փոքր էր: Պարզվեց նաև, որ մարդկանց մաշկում աղի կոնցենտրացիան մեծ է այն մասերում, որտեղ կա մանրէների ներխուժման վտանգ: Հավանաբար աղի առկայությունը մեր իմունային համակարգի համար ևս կարևոր է: Ենթադրվում է, որ վաղ ժամանակներում՝ մինչև հակաբիոտիկների հայտնագործումը, պաշտպանական համակարգերի ակտիվացումն աղի միջնորդությամբ կարևոր դեր է խաղացել օրգանիզմի համար: Սակայն պետք չէ մոռանալ աղի ավելցուկի բացասական հետևանքների մասին: Նյութի օգտակար կամ վնասակար լինելը կախված է քանակությունից (նույն աղի ավելցուկը կարող է հանգեցնել իմունային խանգարումների): Սակայն աղի քանակության տեղային ավելացումը կարող է օգտակար ազդեցություն թողնել: Հնարավոր է՝ հետագայում ստեղծվեն աղային սպեղանիներ կամ վերքերը բուժող գելեր, որոնք կկիրառվեն՝ որպես հասարակ և էժան իմունոստիմուլյատորներ:
