Վինսենթ վան Գոգն իր «Աստղազարդ գիշեր» կտավը ստեղծել է մահից մեկ տարի առաջ՝ 1889 թ. հունիսին: Սա ոչ միայն նկարչի ամենահաջող գործերից է, այլ նաև մեծ կարևորություն ունի արևմտյան գեղանկարչության մեջ:
2004 թ. Հաբլ տիեզերական աստղադիտակով ուսումնասիրությունների ժամանակ հայտնաբերվեց փոշու ամպերով և գազերով պատված հեռավոր մի աստղ: Աստղագետները պնդում են, որ այդ աստղի տիեզերական նկարները չափազանց նման են Վան Գոգի «Աստղազարդ գիշեր» նկարին:
Գիտնականները փորձում էին պարզել, թե ինչ կապ ունի արտիստի աշխատանքը հայտնագործման հետ, և հասկացան, որ Վան Գոգի նկարներից շատերում հեղուկների ինչ-որ տատանումներ են պատկերված:
Ինչպես պարզ է դարձել, երբ հայտնի հոլանդացի նկարիչն ապաստան էր գտել Ֆրանսիայում, նա «հայտնաբերել է» գիտության ամենաբարդ հասկացություններից մեկը՝ տատանումը:
Հեղուկային դինամիկայում տատանումը տերմին է, որը նկարագրում է հեղուկի անկանոն հոսքը: Տատանումների շնորհիվ են ձևավորվում ամպերը: Դրանք այս տեսքն ունեն.
Ավելի քան հարյուր տարի առաջ Վան Գոգը կարողացել է ընկալել ու պատկերել ամենաբարդ երևույթներից մեկը երբևէ և միավորել լույսն ու շարժումն իր կտավներում:
Այս հայտնագործությունը հետաքրքրություն է առաջացրել շատ գիտնականների մոտ, և նրանք որոշել են ուսումնասիրել այլ իմպրեսիոնիստների գործեր հասկանալու համար՝ արդյոք վերջիններս նույն կերպ են պատկերել տատանումները: Սակայն պարզ է դարձել, որ մնացած նկարիչների կտավները մաթեմատիկական տեսանկյունից այնքան էլ ճշգրիտ չեն, որքան Վան Գոգի գլուխգործոցները: Անգամ Էդվարդ Մանչի «Ճիչը» չի կարող համեմատվել «Աստղազարդ գիշերի» հետ:
