Արեւի լույսից ալերգիայի պատճառով ռազմածովային ուժերի ինժեներ 27-ամյա Սեմ Ֆելփսը ստիպված է գրքերից եւ ֆիլմերից հայտնի վամպիրի նման ապրել: Փողոց դուրս գալու համար նա ստիպված է մանրամասն ուսումնասիրել եղանակի տեսությունը եւ համապատասխան հագուստ ընտրել: Լողափ հասնելով տղամարդը ստիպված է դեմքը դիմակով փակել եւ հագնել ստորջրյա լողորդի հանդերձանք, ձեռնոց եւ ճտքերը փակող կոշիկ:

Եթե արեւոտ օրերին մաշկը չպաշտպանի արեւի ճառագայթներից, դրա վրա հիվանդագին այտուց եւ կարմիր ցան կհայտնվի` ոչ միայն ամռանը, այլեւ ձմռանը: Սեմը հազվագյուտ խանգարմամբ է տառապում, որը էրիթրոպոետիկ պրոտոպորֆիրիա է կոչվում, որի հետեւանքով նրա մաշկը արեւի ուլտրամանուշակագույն ճառագայթների ազդեցությամբ այրվածքներով է ծածկվում:

Սեմի խոսքով` երբ փողոց է դուրս գալիս, այնպիսի զգացողություն է ունենում, թե մեկն իր մաշկի մոտ կրակայրիչ է պահել. բավական է արեւի ճառագայթը մաշկի վրա ընկնի, զգացողություն է առաջանում, թե այդ մեկն իր կրակայրիչը վառում է:

Էրիթրոպոետիկ պրոտոպորֆիրիան ուլտրամանուշակագույնի նկատմամբ զգայունությունն է, որն առաջանում է օրգանիզմում պորֆիրին կոչվող քիմիական նյութի արտադրման խանգարման հետեւանքով: Արդյունքում այս նյութը կուտակվում է եւ բերում արեւի լույսի նկատմամբ մեծ զգայունության: Հիվանդությունն առաջանում է մաշկի վրա ծակող, քոր եկող կամ այրող զգացողություններից, ինչպես նաեւ կարմրելուց եւ այրվածքներից` արեւի տակ նույնիսկ կարճատեւ մնալուց հետո: Որոշ դեպքերում այս հիվանդության զոհերը բախվում են նաեւ լյարդի հիվանդություններին: Հիվանդությունը, ցավոք, ներկայումս անբուժելի է, իսկ հիվանդները պարզապես պետք է արեգակից թաքնվեն:
