Երբ 1944 թվականին 23-ամյա Ջոն Մաքեյը փրկեց 20-ամյա Էդիթ Շթայներին Աուշվիթց համակենտրոնացման ճամբարում, նրանցից ոչ մեկի մտքով նույնիսկ չէր էլ անցնում, որ իրենց կյանքի մնացած մասը միասին էին ապրելու։

Ջոնը, ով փախչել էր Լիբիայում իտալացի ռազմագերիների ճամբարից, դարձել էր շոտլանդական ուժերի մասնակից, որի կազմում էլ համակենտրոնացման ճամբարների սարսափներից փրկել է Էդիթին ու շատ այլոց։

Էդիթը Հոլոքոստի ժամանակ կորցրել էր ընտանիքի 39 անդամներին. միայն ինքն ու մայրն էին ողջ մնացել։

Ազատագրումը նշելու համար կազմակերպված խնջույքին Ջոնն ուզում է պարել Էդիթի հետ։ Նա ընկերոջն ուղարկում է՝ Էդիթին հարցնելու՝ համաձա՞յն է պարել նրա հետ։ Իսկ Էդիթը ընկերոջը ետ է ուղարկում՝ հաղորդագրությամբ, որ կպարի նրա հետ միայն այն դեպքում, երբ հենց ինքը գա նրան հրավիրելու։

Ջոնը հավաքեց ողջ խիզախությունը՝ նրան մոտենալու, ու առաջին պարը դարձավ 70 տարվա սիրո պատմության սկիզբը։

Նրանք ամուսնացան 1946 թվականի հուլիսի 17-ին ու վերադարձան Շոտլանդիա։ Երջանիկ ամուսինները երկու երեխա ունեցան՝ Շերոնն ու Փիթերը։ Այս տարի նրանք միասին նշել են իրենց 71-րդ Վալենտինը, բայց ամուսնության տարեդարձից 3 շաբաթ առաջ 92-ամյա Էդիթը հեռացել է կյանքից։

Այնուամենայնիվ, սիրո այս պատմությունը հուզում է բոլորին ու ստիպում հավատալ, որ իրական սեր իսկապես գոյություն ունի։
