Հունվարը տարվա ամենացուրտ ամիսն է: Հանրապետության տարածքում օդի միջին ամսական ջերմաստիճանը -6.70C է, իսկ ամսվա առավել ցուրտ ժամանակահատվածը երկրորդ տասնօրյակն է, երբ ինտենսիվ ցրտեր դիտվում են անտիցիկլոնային եղանակային պայմաններում` հատկապես հյուսիս-արևմուտքում և Շիրակի բարձրավանդակում: Այդ շրջաններում հունվարի միջին ջերմաստիճանը կազմում է Գյումրիում -90C, Պաղակնում -120C (բացարձակ նվազագույնը դիտվել է 1961 թ. հունվարի 24-ին Պաղակնում` -42.20C): Բավական ցածր ջերմաստիճաններ են դիտվում լեռնանցքներում (Սիսիան, Որոտան) և Ապարանի բարձրավանդակում` -7…-90C, իսկ բացարձակ նվազագույն ջերմաստիճանը այստեղ հասնում է -340C: 

Ցածր ջերմաստիճաններ են գրանցվում նաև ռելիեֆի ցածրադիր մասերում, որտեղ լեռներից գիշերային ժամերին ցած է իջնում սառը օդը, որը ձնածածկույթի առկայության դեպքում ավելի է սառչում: Երևանի գոգահովտում հունվարի միջին ջերմաստիճանը -3…-40C է, սակայն դեպքերի 12%-ում հունվարի օրական միջին ջերմաստիճանները -100C-ից ցածր են եղել: Հանրապետության ծայր հարավային և հյուսիս-արևելյան շրջաններում հունվարին տաք է` միջին ամսական ջերմաստիճանը` Բագրատաշենում ` +0,30C, Մեղրիում` +1,60C: Այս շրջաններում նվազագույն ջերմաստիճանը -17…-200C-ից ցածր չի իջնում: Ամենացուրտ հունվարները հանրապետության տարածքում դիտվել են 1933, 1950, 1957, 1964, 1972, 1977, 1983, 2002, 2007, 2008 թթ.: Բացառապես ցուրտ է եղել 1972 թ. հունվարը, երբ միջին ամսական ջերմաստիճանը հունրապետության տարածքում տատանվում էր -5.10C-ից (Բերդ) մինչև -17.50C-ի (Պաղակն) սահմաններում, Երևանում բացարձակ նվազագույնը 1972 թ. հունվարի 21-ին գրանցվել է -29.50C, 2007 թ., երբ միջին ամսական ջերմաստիճանը տատանվել է -4…-110C(Սյունիքի հովտային շրջաններում և Տավուշում -2…+40C), 2008 թ., երբ միջին ամսական ջերմաստիճանը տատանվել է -5…-130C սահմաններում: Տաք հունվարներ դիտվել են 1963,1966,1987,2003,2004, 2010, 2014 թթ., ընդ որում 1966 թ. շատ շրջաններում հունվարի միջին ամսական ջերմաստիճանը եղել է դրական, իսկ հյուսիս-արևելյան և հարավ-արևելյան շրջաններում այն եղել է +60C (Գորիս, Կապան), Մեղրիում` +90C: Երևանում նույնպես այդ տարվա հունվարը բացառապես տաք էր` +50C:
