Սիրիական հիմնախնդրի շրջանակներում ծավալվող և՛ ռազմական, և՛ հատկապես քաղաքական գործընթացների ու հեռանկարային զարգացումների համատեքստում արևմտյան մամուլում հատկապես վերջին շրջանում առավել հաճախակի են դարձել անդրադարձները Սիրիայի նորագույն պատմության ընթացքում որոշակի դերակատարություն ունեցած որոշ պերսոնաժների վերաբերյալ:

Մասնավորապես, խոսքը Բաշար ալ-Ասադի կրտսեր հորեղբոր՝ 78-ամյա Ռիֆաթ ալ-Ասադի մասին է, ով իր եղբոր՝ Արաբական հանրապետության նախկին նախագահ Հաֆիզ ալ-Ասադի հետ ունեցած տարաձայնությունների հետևանքով և հատկապես 1983 թ. անհաջող հեղաշրջման փորձից հետո դեռևս 1980-ականների կեսերին հեռացել էր երկրից և մշտական բնակություն հաստատել Եվրոպայում՝ մասնավորապես Ֆրանսիայում, Իսպանիայում (ի դեպ, անգամ տարագրության ընթացքում՝1984-1998թթ. Ռիֆաթ ալ-Ասադը ֆորմալ կերպով զբաղեցրել է Սիրիայի երկրորդ փոխնախագահի պաշտոնը): Վերջինս նաև առանցքային դերակատարություն է ունեցել Սիրիայի նորագույն պատմության ամենադրամատիկ էջերից մեկում՝ 1982թ. «Մուսուլման եղբայրներ» իսլամական արմատական կազմակերպության կողմից Համայում բարձրացրած ապստամբության ճնշման գործում, որի հետևանքով զոհվել է, տարբեր տվյալներով, 5-40 հազար մարդ: 
Օրերս շվեյցարական մի շարք լրատվամիջոցներ միաժամանակ գրել են, որ ներկայում եվրոպական մի շարք երկրներում անշարժ գույքի ոլորտում լուրջ բիզնես ունեցող Ռիֆաթ ալ-Ասադը վերջին շրջանում առավել հաճախ է այցելում Ժնև, ավելին, նա անգամ մշտական բնակություն հաստատելու նպատակներ ունի շվեյցարական քաղաքում: Բացի այդ նշվում է նաև, որ ՌԴ իշխանությունները ևս հատկապես վերջին շրջանում որոշակի հետաքրքություն են ցուցաբերում վերոնշյալ անձի նկատմամբ. անգամ Բաշար ալ-Ասադի՝ Մոսկվա կատարած այցից մեկ շաբաթ առաջ Ռուսաստանի մայրաքաքաք է այցելել Ռիֆաթ ալ-Ասադը: Իսկ ավելի վաղ՝ սրանից շուրջ 2 տարի առաջ, վերջինի հետ հանդիպել էր նաև ՌԴ փոխատգործնախարարներից մեկը:
Բանն այն է, որ Ռիֆաթ ալ-Ասադը, հատկապես Համայի դեպքերից հետո չի դիտարկվում որպես լուրջ այլընտրանք Սիրիայի գործող նախագահին, նրա հետ համագործակցությունը բացառում են նաև սիրիական քաղաքական ընդդիմության ներկայացուցիչները: Մինչդեռ այլ է խնդիրը Ռիֆաթի որդիներից մեկի՝ Սիվար ալ-Ասադի դեպքում, ով վերջին շրջանում բավական ակտիվություն է ցուցաբերում քաղաքական հարթակում:
Ինչ վերաբերում է ռուսական իշխանությունների կողմից նախաձեռնվող նաև վերոնշյալ շփումներին, ապա դրանք կարելի է մեկնաբանել 2 տեսանկյունից. նախ այն, որ ներկայում դրանք օգտագործվում են Սիրիայի գործող նախագահի վրա հնարավոր ճնշում գործադրելու նպատակով և երկրորդ՝ Կրեմլում բավական լուրջ են տրամադրված ապագայի Սիրիայում իրենց շահերը երաշխավորելու հարցին:
