Ժամանակակից հասարակության մեջ բավականին լայն տարածում ունի «լիդեր» տերմինը, ինչը շատ հաճախ օգտագործվում է ոչ պատեհ առիթով` հաճախ առաջացնելով թյուրըմբռնում:
Քաղաքագիտության մեջ լիդերի տեսության ուսումնասիրության հարցում հիմնակնում կիառվում է իրար հակադիր երկու եզրույթ։ Առաջին մոտեցմամբ` բացարձակայնացվում է անհատի դերակատարումը պատմական իրադարձությունների և գործընթացների վրա, իսկ երկրորդ մոտեցումը հիմնական շեշտը դնում է օբյեկտիվորեն ձևավորված պատմական նախադրյալների վրա, որոնք էլ թելադրում են անհատների վարքագիծը։

Լիդերության առաջին դրսևորումն, ըստ մասնագետների, ի սկզբանե ձևավորվել է դեռևս կենդանիների մոտ: Ահա այդ երևույթով է նաև պայմանավորված, որ քաղաքականության մեջ լիդերներին երբեմն բնորոշում են կենդանիներին հատուկ հատկանիշներով:
Իտալացի քաղաքագետ Պարետտոն, հետևելով քաղաքական գործիչ Մաքիավելու օրինակին, լիդերներին բաժանում էր երկու խմբի՝ աղվեսների և առյուծների: Աղվես լիդերները գործում են ավելի խորամանկ կերպով, նրանք խորաթափանց են, կարողանում են հաշվարկել հակառակորդի քայլերի հաջորդականությունը, գործում են ավելի գաղտնի կերպով և երբևիցե ուղղակի հակամարտության մեջ չեն մտնում: Առյուծ լիդերները գործում են բաց ճակատով, նախընտրում են կառավարման ուժային մեթոդները և իրենց հաստատակամության շնորհիվ փորձում են հաղթանակի հասնել: Քաղաքականության մեջ նախընտրելի է համարվում այս 2 ոճերի համադրությունը և ինչպես Մաքիավելին էր պնդում՝ իսկական քաղաքական լիդերը պետք է լինի աղվեսի պես խորամանկ, որ խուսափի թակարդից և առյուծի պես հզոր, որ վախեցնի գայլերի ոհմակին:

Ամերիկացի քաղաքագետ Լասսուելը առանձնացնում է քաղաքական լիդերի երեք տեսակ՝ լիդեր-ագիտատոր, լիդեր-ադմինիստրատոր, լիդեր-տեսաբան:
Լիդեր-ագիտատորները օժտված են արտաքին հմայքով, համոզելու ունակությամբ, հռետորական ձիրքով: Այսպիսի լիդերները շատ հեշտությամբ են հասարակությանը տրամադրում դեպի իրենց հայացքները և բանավեճերում միշտ հաղթած են դուրս գալիս: Ադմինիստրատիվ լիդերներն ավելի օժտված են կազմակերպչական ունակություններով: Նրանք փայլուն վարչարարներ են, այսպես կոչված թոփ-մենեջերներ, որոնք աշխատանքի ճիշտ կազմակերպման և կարգապահության շնորհիվ կարողանում են հասնել մեծ արդյունքների: Նրանք գերադասում են մնալ ստվերում, սակայն կառավարում են իրավիճակը և իշխանական բոլոր լծակները պահում են իրենց ձեռքում: Տեսաբան-լիդերներն ունեն հզոր ինտելեկտուալ ունակություններ: Նրանք հասարակությանը մատուցում են նոր գաղափարներ, մշակում են ամբողջական գաղափարախոսություններ և մարդկանց վրա իրենց ազդեցությունն ապահովում են իրենց հզոր ինտելեկտի շնորհիվ:

Լիդերը պետք է ոգեշնչի մարդկանց, նա պետք է բացահայտի մարդկանց մեջ առկա լավագույն գծերը: Լիդերը պետք է ձգտի այնպես անել, որ յուրաքանչյուր մարդ նույնպես լիդեր դառնա: Նա պարտավոր է օգնել այլ մարդկանց, լսել նրանց, փորձել հասկանալ և մտնել նրանց դրության մեջ: Իսկական լիդերը չպետք է իրեն բարձր դասի այլ մարդկանցից, նա պետք է ուղղակի ծառայի մարդկանց: Լիդերը պետք է սեփական օրինակով ցույց տա այն, ինչի կոչ անում է ուրիշներին:
