Ֆուտբոլի աշխարհի առաջնության A խմբի Եգիպտոս-Ուրուգվայ հանդիպումը կայացավ Եկատերինբուրգ քաղաքի համանուն մարզադաշտում (0:1):

Հանդիպման մեկնարկային րոպեներին Ուրուգվայի, և թե Եգիպտոսի հավաքականի ֆուտբոլիստները զգուշ էին գործում, սակայն քիչ առավելություն ուներ Ուրուգվայի ընտրանու անդամները: Եգիպտացիները բավականին հաջող էին պաշտպանվում առաջին 45 րոպեներին: Ուրուգվայի կազմում աչքի ընկնելու հնարավորություն ունեին Էդիսոն Կավանին և Լուիս Սուարեսը: Վիճակագրությունը ևս խոսում էր հարավամերիկյան թիմի կօգտին՝ 57-ը 43 հարաբերակցությամբ:

Երկրորդ կեսում ավելի վստահ մեկնարկեցին Ուրուգվայի թիմի ֆուտբոլիստները: Շատ լավ հնարավորություն բաց թողեց կատալոնական «Բարսելոնա»-ի հարձակվող Լուիս Սուարեսը, ով վերջին հարվածով չգրավեց դարպասը: Հանդիպման վերջնամասում Ուրուգվայը օգտագործեց տուգանայինի հնարավորությունը: Գլխի շեշտակի հարվածով աչքի ընկավ Խոսե Խիմենեսը և նվազագույն հաշվով հաղթանակ բերեց Ուրուգվային:  Եգիպտոսի հավաքականի կազմում այդպես էլ խաղադաշտ չմտավ անգլիական «Լիվերպուլ»-ի հարձակվող Մո Սալահը, ով նաև նշում էր ծննդյան օրը:

Ուրուգվայի ազգային ընտրանին հաջորդ հանդիպումը կանցկանցնի հունիսի 20-ին՝ մրցելով Սաուդյան Արաբիայի հետ Դոնի Ռոստովում: Եգիպտոսը հաջորդ խաղում կփորձի գերազանցել Ռուսաստանի հավաքականին հունիսի 19-ին: Այդ խաղը կկայանա Սանկտ Պետերբուրգում:

Առաջին տուրից հետո A խմբում առաջտարները Ուրուգվայի և Ռուսաստանի հավաքականներն են 3-ական միավորով:
