Օրվա տևողությունը հավասար է Երկիր մոլորակի պտույտի պարբերությանը իր առանցքի շուրջ, այն է՝ 24 ժամի, կամ 1440 րոպեի, կամ էլ 86400 վայրկյանի:
Իրականում այդպես չէ:
Օրվա տևողությունը կապված է որոշ հանգամանքների հետ և կարող է տարբեր լինել: Զարմանալի է, բայց այդ տարբերությունը կարող է երբեմն անգամ 50 միլիվայրկյանի հասնել: Սա կապված է նրա հետ, որ Երկիր մոլորակի՝ իր առանցքի շուրջ պտտվելու արագությունը կարող է փոխվել մի շարք երևույթների պատճառով: Օրինակ, համաշխարհային օվկիանոսի կամ մթնոլորտի ջերմաստիճանի փոփոխության ժամանակ: Համարվում է, որ սրանց ջերմաստիճանի նվազման հետևանքով Երկիրը պտտվում է ավելի արագ, քանի որ գործում է պահի իմպուլսի պահպանման օրենքը: Բացի այս, Երկրի պտույտի արագությունը կարող է փոփոխվել աշխարհագրական երևույթների, մակընթացությունների պատճառով: Օրինակ, 2004 թվականին Հնդկական օվկիանոսում արձանագրված երկրաշարժի պատճառով այդ օրը կրճատվել է 2,68 միլիվայրկյանով:
Բացի այն, որ ամեն օրը կարող է տարբեր տևողություն ունենալ, օրերը աստիճանաբար երկարում են Լուսնի ձգողականության հետևանքով, որի տեսանելի արդյունքը մակընթացություններն են: Կամ, այլ խոսքով, Երկիր մոլորակի պտույտի արագությունը աստիճանաբար նվազում է: Հաշվարկված է, որ 100 տարվա ընթացքում օրվա տևողությունը ավելանում է 2 միլիվայրկյանով: Թվում է, թե սա աննշան բան է, բայց իրականում, օրինակ, 500 միլիոն տարի առաջ Երկիր մոլորակի օրվա տևողությունը եղել է 20,5 ժամ, 100 միլիոն տարի առաջ՝ 23 ժամ: Այս ամենը ապացուցված է նաև փորձերով, հաշվվել են բրածո կորալների կալցիումական գծերը, որոնք էլ ցույց են տալիս օրվա տևողությունը: Այդ հաշվարկներով ենթադրվում է նաև, որ 1,3 միլիարդ տարի առաջ (Նախաքեմբրիական դարաշրջան) օրվա տևողությունը եղել է 14–16 ժամ, իսկ տարին ունեցել է 546–588 օր:
Բացի այս ամենը, կապված հաշվարկի կետ ընտրելու հետ, աստղագիտության մեջ գոյություն ունեն «արևային օր» և «աստղային օր» հասկացություններ: Եթե հաշվարկի կետ է ընտրվում հեռավոր աստղը, ապա ի տարբերություն արևի հաշվարկի կետ ընտրելու՝ ստացվում է օրվա այլ տևողություն: Արևային օրվա տևողությունը 24 ժամ է՝ հաշվարկի կետը արևն է: Աստղային օրվա տևողությունը 23 ժամ 56 րոպե 4 վայրկյան է՝ հաշվարկի կետը հեռավոր աստղն է: Սա կապված է նրա հետ, որ երկրի մակերևույթին գտնվող դիտողի համար արևը անշարժ է, բայց արևը ևս այլ աստղերի նկատմամբ տեղաշարժվում է, և ստացվում են օրվա տևողության տարբեր արդյունքներ: Աստղային օր հասկացությունը պատահական բնագավառներում է օգտագործվում:
Հաշվի առնելով այս ամենը՝ 1967 թվականին Չափերի և կշիռների միջազգային կոմիտեն ընդունեց ֆիքսված վայրկյան հասկացությունը: Այսինքն, եթե առաջ օր, ժամ, վայրկյան հասկացությունները որոշվել էին հենց օրվա տևողությամբ, ապա հիմա վայրկյանը որոշվում է ատոմային ժամացույցի օգնությամբ: Ելնելով ֆիքսված վայրկյան հասկացությունից՝ 2005 թվականից օրվա տևողությունը որոշվում է օրվա տևողությանը «կոորդինացիայի վայրկյան» ավելացնելով, որպեսզի «ատոմային օրը» հավասար լինի արևային օրվան: Իհարկե, սա լավ նորություն էր աստղագետների համար, բայց պարզվում է, որ գլխացավանք է համակարգիչների համար. առաջացած ժամային տարբերությունների հետևանքով լինում են ծրագրերի խափանումներ:
