Ջուրը շատ թույլ արտահայտված երկնագույն է: Ընդ որում, երբ մենք հաճախ տեսնում ենք, որ ծովը երկնագույն է, համարում ենք, որ դա երկնքի գույնն է արտացոլվում ջրերում: Այստեղ, իհարկե, այդ երևույթը ևս առկա է, բայց առանց դրա էլ ջուրը ունի թույլ արտահայտված երկնագույն երանգ: Դրանում կարելի է համոզվել հասարակ փորձերով: Օրինակ, եթե նայեք ձյան մեջ փորած խորը փոսին կամ էլ սառած ջրվեժի հաստ սառույցին: Կարելի է նաև վերցնել մաքուր ջրով լցված շատ մեծ և շատ խորը, սպիտակ պատերով լողավազան և նայել նրա մեջ, կնկատվի, որ ջուրը երկնագույն է: Մաքուր ջրի գույնը կարելի է նկատել նաև, երբ նայում ես մաքուր ջրով լցված և երկու ծայրերը թափանցիկ նյութով փակված խողովակի միջով սպիտակ լույսի աղբյուրին: Նկատելի երկնագույն երանգը հանդիսանում է մարդու աչքի համար տեսանելի լույսի սպեկտրի կարմիր մասի թեթևակի կլանման արդյունք: Պարզ երկնքի ժամանակ ծովի ջուրը լինում է արտահայտված երկնագույն շնորհիվ ջրի բնական գույնի և երկնքի արտացոլման: Նույն ջուրը մառախլապատ եղանակին լինում է ավելի շատ գորշավուն: Ծովի ջրի գույնը կարող է տարբեր լինել նաև այլ պատճառներով. օրինակ, ջրի ծաղկման պատճառով: Ջրի ծաղկումը (էվտրոֆացում) քաղցրահամ ջրային էկոհամակարգերի վերին կենսահորիզոնում կանաչ և կապտականաչ ջրիմուռների զանգվածային բազմացումն է, որն առաջանում է բնական կամ մարդկային գործոնների ազդեցությամբ։ Ջրի «ծաղկմանը» նպաստում է կենսածին նյութերով (ֆոսֆոր, ազոտ, օրգանական միացություններ) ջրամբարների աղտոտումը, որի հետևանքով փոխվում են ջրի գույնը, որակը, խախտվում է էկոհամակարգը, վատթարանում ջրավազանի թթվածնային ռեժիմը։ Ջրի «ծաղկման» յուրահատուկ և ինքնատիպ դրսևորումներից է Սևանա լիճը. լճի մակարդակի անկման ժամանակ այնտեղ սկսեցին ակտիվորեն բազմանալ կապտականաչ ջրիմուռները և հաճախ է լիճն ունենում կապտականաչավուն երանգ: Նույն երանգը ունեն սովորաբար նաև օվկիանոսների ջրերը: Օվկիանոսի ջրի գույնը կապված է երկնքի գույնի, ամպերի գույնի , հորիզոնից արեգակի բարձրության և այդ տարածքում առկա ֆիտոպլանկտոնի քանակից: Ֆիտոպլանկտոնի մեծ քանակություն ունեցող ջրերը կանաչ են կամ կապտականաչ: Երբեմն որոշակի տեսակի ջրիմուռների (կոչվում են դինոֆլլեգել յատներ) մեծ աճը առաջացնում է, այսպես կոչված, «կարմիր ջրանցք»՝ ծովի մակերևույթի վրա կարմիր շերտի առկայություն: Գետերի ջրերի գույնը կարող է տարբեր լինել, և կապված է նրա հետ, թե ինչ տեսակի հանքանյութեր են անցնում նրանց մեջ: Լինում են դեղին գետեր, սրանք պարունակում են մեծ քանակի լուծված կավ կամ այլ օրգանական նյութեր (Թարիմի ստորին հոսանքը Չինաստանում կամ Կուբանը Ռուսաստանում): Լինում են սև գետեր, սրանք սովորաբար խիտ անտառածածկ տարածքներով հոսող գետերն են (Ռիու–Նեգրուն, որը հոսում է Բրազիլիայի ջունգլիներով):

Ջրի գույնը որոշելու հարցում ճապոնացիները, ինչպես միշտ, առանձնանում են իրենց գործնական բնորոշումներով: Իրականում դա ինչ–որ տեղ ճիշտ է, քանի որ, ինչպես հասկացանք, ջուրը կարող է տարբեր գույներ ունենալ, բացի այդ կարող է տարբեր լինել տարբեր մարդկանց գունընկալումը: Ճապոնիայի ձկնորսական տնտեսություններում տարածված է ջրի գույները նշել ձկնատեսակներով՝ «կարպից մինչև կարմրախայտ»: Եթե ճապոնացին ասում է, որ ջրի գույնը կարպ է, նշանակում է այդ ջուրը գորշավուն է (կարպը ապրում է պղտոր ջրերում), իսկ եթե ասում է, որ ջրի գույնը կարմրախայտ է, նշանակում է, որ գույն չունի (կարմրախայտը ապրում է ամենապարզ ջրերում):
