Պանամա գլխարկի «հայրենիքը» Պանաման է:

Իրականում այդպես չէ:

Պանամա գլխարկը Էկվադորի ժողովրդի ազգային գլխարկն է: Եվրոպա և Հյուսիսային Ամերիկա այս գլխարկը «եկել է» 19-րդ դարում, իսկ պանամա կոչվել է, քանի որ այն արտահանել են կազմակերպություններ, որոնք գործել են Պանամայում: Բացի այդ, Պանամայի ջրանցքի շինարարությունից վերադարձած բազմաթիվ աշխատողներ իրենց հետ տուն տարան պանամա գլխարկ: Էկվադորում պանամա հյուսում էին տոկիլա բույսի ծղոտից, որն աճում է միայն իրենց տարածքում: Մեկ գլխարկի պատրաստումը կարող էր տևել մինչև 6 ամիս, քանի որ տոկիլայից կարելի է հյուսել միայն արևածագին կամ մայրամուտին. օրվա այլ ժամերին ծղոտը չափազանց փխրուն է դառնում: Տոկիլայի բերքը հավաքվում էր ամսվա ընթացքում միայն 5 օր: Պանամա ի սկզբանե անվանել են միայն Մոնտե Քրիստի վայրում աճող տոկիլայից պատրաստված ծղոտե գլխարկները: Այս գլխարկները պատրաստելիս են եղել անհիշելի ժամանակներից: Էկվադորի ծովափերին կատարված պեղումների ժամանակ հայտնաբերվել են մեր թվարկությունից առաջ մոտավորապես 4000 թվականի հետաքրքիր գլխարկներով արձանիկներ: Որոշ գիտնականներ համարում են, որ գլխարկներ հյուսելու արվեստը էկվադորի տեղաբնակները փոխառել են պոլոնեզցի տեղաբնակներից: Էկվադոր հասած առաջին իսպանացիները զարմացած էին տոկիլայից հյուսված պանամայի թափանցիկությամբ և համոզված էին, որ դրանք պատրաստված են վամպիրի կաշվից: Սկսած 16-րդ դարից, պանամաներ սկսեցին հյուսվել զանգվածաբար: Բայց արդեն օգտագործվում էր այլ տեքստիլ նյութ, որի թելերը ստանում էին պանամական արմավենուց: Ներկայումս ևս հաճախ այդ նյութն է օգտագործվում, օգտագործվում են նաև բազմաթիվ այլ նյութեր՝ սկսած սովորական կտորից: Տոկիլայից ևս հին տեխնոլոգիայով գլխարկներ Էկվադորում պատրաստում են, բայց դրանք շատ թանկ են և վաճառվում են միջինը 1000 ֆունտ ստեռլինգով:

Երբ 19-րդ դարում պանամա գլխարկը հայտնվեց Անգլիայում, այն անմիջապես սիրվեց, քանի որ թագավորական ընտանիքը պանաման համարեց ամենահարմար ամառային գլխարկը և օգտագործում էր այն: Պանաման նաև անփոխարինելի դարձավ տարբեր սպորտային միջոցառումների և բացօթյա պիկնիկների ժամանակ: Իսկ երբ 1901 թվականին մահացավ Վիկտորյա թագուհին, առաջին անգամ պանամային ավելացվեց սև ժապավեն: Ամերիկայում ևս պանամա գլխարկը մեծ ճանաչում ուներ: Սկզբից այն հանդիսանում էր Պանամայի ջրանցքի աշխատողների բանվորական հագուստի անբաժանելի մասը: 1906 թվականին ջրանցքի շինարարություն ժամանած ԱՄՆ նախագահ Թեոդոր Ռուզվելտը լուսանկարվեց պանամայով: Դա պանամա գլխարկի մասսայականացման սկիզբն էր ամերիկացիների համար:
