Միջնադարում մարդիկ համարել են, որ Երկիրը տափակ է:

Իրականում այնքան էլ այդպես չէ:

Մոտավորապես մեր թվարկությունից առաջ 4–րդ դարից սկսած՝ միայն պատահական մարդիկ են համարել, որ Երկիրը տափակ է: Ավելի առաջ իրոք շատ ժողովուրդների մոտ համարվում էր, որ երկիրը տափակ է. դա արտահայտվել է սկանդինավյան միֆոլոգիայում, վաղ հինդուիզմում, բաբելոնյան գրվածքներում և այլն: Աստղագիտության և երկրագիտության զարգացումը հին Հունաստանում ապացուցեց, որ Երկիրը կլոր է: Առաջինը այդ ժամանակ Պյութագորասն է ենթադրել, որ Երկիրը ունի գնդի տեսք: Նույն կարծիքին էին նաև մեր թվարկությունից առաջ 4–րդ դարում ապրած Ֆեոֆաստը, Դիոգենեսը, Պարմենիդը և այլն: 200 տարի անց Արիստոտելը հաստատեց, որ Երկիրը գնդաձև է՝ լուսնային խավարումները ուսումնասիրելով: Նրանից ևս 100 տարի անց Էրատոսֆենը անգամ ճշգրիտ հաշվեց երկրագնդի պարագիծը և շրջագիծը: Վաղ միջնադարում մի շարք աստվածաբանների աշխատություններում կարծիքներ առաջացան, որ Երկիրը տափակ է: Արդեն բուն միջնադարում այս կարծիքները ժխտվեցին՝ հին հունական աստղագետների աշխատությունները Եվրոպայում ուսումնասիրելուց հետո:

Իրական միֆը, որ նախկինում կարծիք է եղել, թե Երկիրը տափակ է, ծագել է 19–րդ դարում: Սրա մեղավորը Վաշինգտոն Իռվինգի՝ 1828 թվականին լույս տեսած կիսագեղարվեստական վեպն է՝«Քրիստափոր Կոլումբոսի կյանքը և ճանապարհորդությունը»: Այստեղ հեղինակը սխալ կարծիք է արտահայտել, թե Կոլումբոսն իր ճամփորդությունը կազմակերպել էր՝ ապացուցելու, որ Երկիրը կլոր է, այլ ոչ թե տափակ, «ինչպես այն ժամանակ բոլորը կարծում էին»: Սա, իհարկե, ավելի է հերոսացնում Կոլումբոսին. պատկերացրեք՝ բոլորը կարծում են, որ Երկիրը տափակ է, և միայն նա է հակառակվում, որ կլոր է, և ապացուցում է դա: 

Միանգամայն լրջորեն, տափակ Երկրի մասին կարծիք բարձրաձայնվել է 1838 թվականին: Դա կատարել է էքսցենտրիկ Սեմուել Բյորլի Ռոուբոտ անունով մի անգլիացի, որը 16 թերթանի մի աշխատություն հրատարակեց «Ցետետիկ (որոնողական, պարզաբանող) աստղագիտություն, որը ապացուցում է, թե ծովի մակերևույթը իդեալական հարթ է, իսկ երկիրը գունդ չէ» վերնագրով: Սրանից մեկ դարից էլ պակաս ժամանակ անց Անգլիայի Թագավորական աստղագիտական ընկերության անդամ և հավատացյալ քրիստոնյա Սեմուել Շենտոնը ստեղծեց «Երկրի տափակության վարկածի պաշտպանների միջազգային կազմակերպություն»: 

Ըստ տրամաբանության, այս կազմակերպությունը պետք է դադարեր գործել 1960– ականներին, քանի որ մարդիկ արդեն տիեզերք էին թռչում և պտտվում Երկրի շուրջը, ամերիկացիներն անգամ Լուսնի վրա իջան: Բայց Շենտոնը հայտարարեց, որ այդ ամենը կեղծիք է, լուսանկարները մոնտաժված են, և տիեզերագնացները, չգիտես ինչու, չեն ուզում, որ մարդիկ իմանան այն մասին, որ երկիրը տափակ է: Շենտոնը մահացել է 1971 թվականին, բայց նրա գործը շարունակվում է. օրինակ՝ 1990–ականներին կազմակերպությունը ուներ 3500 անդամ, որոնք բոլորն էլ բացարձակ համոզված էին, որ Երկիրը տափակ է: Ներկայումս այս կազմակերպությունը մոտ 800 անդամ ունի և գործում է վեբ– կայքի տեսքով:

Աշխարհակենտրոնության (Արևն  է պտտվում Երկրի շուրջը) և Երկրի տափակության ավետարանական կողմնակիցներն առնվազն 75 հատված են բերում Ավետարանից, որոնք ապացուցում են, թե Երկիրը տափակ է, իսկ ըստ հավատացյալների, այն, ինչ գրված է Գրքում, բացարձակ ճիշտ է: Ղուրանում ոչինչ չի գրված Երկրի տեսքի մասին, բայց որոշ ղուրանագետներ ևս համաձայն չեն, որ Երկիրը լինի կլոր: Սա կապված է նրա հետ, որ եթե Երկիրը կլոր է, ապա կլինեն վայրեր (հյուսիսում) որտեղ, օրինակ, մեկ ամիս լույս է: Ըստ հավատքի, Ռամազան սրբազան ամսում չի կարելի ուտել լույս ժամանակ, և ստացվում է, որ այդ վայրում գտնվող հավատացյալ մուսուլմանը պետք է սովից մեռնի: Այդ իսկ պատճառով Երկիրը պետք է տափակ լինի:
