Ամերիկա մայրցամաքը կոչվել է իտալացի ծովագնաց և հետազոտող Ամերիգո Վեսպուչիի անունով:

Իրականում այդպես չէ:

Պարզվում է՝ Ամերիկա անունը անմիջական կապ ունի անգլիացի Ռիչարդ Ամերիկեի անվան հետ: Նախ՝ Ամերիգոն անուն է, այլ ոչ թե ազգանուն, իսկ համաշխարհային պրակտիկայում սովորաբար ազգանվամբ են տեղանուններ անվանում (օրինակ՝ Թասմանիա, Կուկի կղզի, Բերինգի նեղուց և այլն): Եթե մայրցամաքի անունը դրվեր իտալացու անունով՝ այն կկոչվեր Վեսպուչի: Բացի դա, ինքը՝ Ամերիգո Վեսպուչին, երբեք այդ նոր հողերը Ամերիկա չի կոչել, այլ անվանել է Նոր երկիր: 

Ամերիգո Վեսպուչին 1449–ից մինչև 1505 թվականները մի քանի անգամ արշավախմբերի կազմում այցելել է Հարավային Ամերիկա, նա երբեք Հյուսիսային Ամերիկայում չի եղել, այնտեղ անգլիացիներն էին: Այդ ընթացքում նա կազմում է Հարավային Ամերիկայի ափամերձ հատվածի քարտեզը: Արդյունքում Վեսպուչին առաջինն է եզրակացրել, որ Կոլումբոսը հայտնագործել է նոր մայրցամաք: 1507 թվականին լույս է տեսնում Լոթարինգյան դքսի քարտեզագիր Մարտին Վալդմյուլլերի՝ Հարավային Ամերիկայի քարտեզը: Ճշգրիտ չիմանալով, թե ինչու է մայրցամաքը Ամերիկա կոչվում, իր գրություններում Վալդմյուլլերը ենթադրում է, որ այդ անունը առաջացել է Ամերիգո Վեսպուչիի անվան թեթև ձևափոխության արդյունքում: Մայրցամաքի անունը ավելի տարածվեց և վերջնականապես հաստատվեց 1538 թվականին՝ հայտնի քարտեզագիր Մերկատորի քարտեզների արդյունքում:

Ավելի վաղ՝ 1497 թվականին, մինչև Ամերիգո Վեսպուչիի առաջին արշավախումբը կուղևորվեր նոր երկրներ, այնտեղ է ուղևորվել վենետիկցի ծովագնաց Ջոն Կաբոտը (ավելի ճշգրիտ՝ Ջովաննի Կաբոտո): Արշավը կազմակերպել էր անգլիական Բրիստոլ քաղաքի շերիֆ, գլխավոր մաքսավոր և վաճառական Ռիչարդ Ամերիկեն: Ջոն Կաբոտը իր միակ փոքրիկ «Մետյու» առագաստանավով, որի անձնակազմը 18 նավաստի էր, 1497 թվականին հասավ Ամերիկա մայրցամաքի ափին: Կաբոտին թվաց, որ այս երկիրը նման չէ շոգ Հնդկաստանին (Կոլումբոսը համարում էր, որ Հնդկաստան է հասել), նա ենթադրեց, որ սա Չինաստանն է: Ամեն դեպքում նա հայտնագործված հողերը հայտարարեց Անգլիայի թագուհու սեփականություն, ինչը և սկիզբ դրեց Անգլիայի կողմից նոր մայրցամաքի գաղութացմանը: Նշենք, որ նա առաջին եվրոպացին էր, որը ոտք է դրել այդ մայրցամաք, անգամ Կոլումբոսը չի հասել մայրցամաքին և եղել է միայն կղզիներում: Կաբոտը կազմել է Հյուսիսային Ամերիկայի ափամերձ հատվածի մանրամասն քարտեզ՝ սկսած Նոր Շոտլանդիայից մինչև Նյուֆաունդլենդ, և բարեհաջող հետ վերադարձել: Լինելով արշավախմբի կազմակերպիչ՝ Ռիչարդ Ամերիկեն համոզված էր, որ նոր հայտնագործված հողերը կկոչվեն իր ազգանունով: Բրիստոլ քաղաքի օրագրում այդպես էլ գրված է. «Բրիստոլի վաճառականների «Մետյու» առագաստանավը հունիսի 24–ին գտել է Ամերիկա երկիրը»: Սա առաջին դեպքն է, որ օգտագործվել է Ամերիկա անունը: Չնայած օրագրի բնօրինակը չի պահպանվել, բայց կան այդ ժամանակվա բազմաթիվ այլ փաստաթղթեր, որոնք հաստատում են, որ այդպիսի գրառում եղել է: Հավանաբար, հենց այս գրառումն էլ հիմք է հանդիսացել, որ քարտեզագիր Մարտին Վալդմյուլլերը իր քարտեզագրած երկիրը անվանի Ամերիկա:

Ցանկացած դեպքում ամենաարդարը կլիներ, որ Ամերիկան կոչվեր նրա հայտնագործողի՝ Քրիստափոր Կոլումբոսի ազգանունով: Սա շատ հետաքրքիր կլիներ, օրինակ՝ ԱՄՆ–ը կկոչվեր Կոլումբոսի Միացյալ Նահանգներ (ԿՄՆ), կունենայինք նաև Կոլումբոսի ձայն ռադիոկայան, կոլումբոսանո սուրճ, Կոլումբոսի հայ օգնության միություն և այլն:
