Լեոնիդների ասուպային հոսքի առավելագույն փուլը կդիտվի նոյեմբերի 17-18-ի գիշերը

Ամենանշանավոր ասուպային հոսքերից մեկը, որի առավելագույն փուլը կլինի նոյեմբերի 17-18-ի գիշերը, երբ մեկ ժամում հնարավոր կլինի դիտել 12-15 ասուպ, դիտվում է նոյեմբերի 8-22-ին: Ինչպես Արմենպրես-ին տեղեկացրին Հայկական աստղագիտական ընկերությունից, Լեոոնիդների ասուպային հոսքի կենտրոնը, որն աստղագիտության մեջ կոչվում է ասուպային հոսքի ռադիանտ, գտնվում է Առյուծի (Leo) համաստեղության ուղղությամբ, որտեղից էլ առաջացել է այս հոսքի անվանումը:
Լեոնիդներն ունեն բավականին մեծ արագություն՝ միջինում 72 կմ/վ և երկնքում թողնում են կանաչավուն հետքեր: Դրանց չափերը կարող են հասնել 9 մմ-ի և կշռել մինչև 85 գրամ: Թեև սովորական տարիներին Լեոնիդներն այնքան էլ ինտենսիվ չեն, սակայն յուրաքանչյուր 33.25 տարին մեկ, երբ Երկիրն անցնում է երկնաքարերի կույտի կենտրոնով, դիտվում է ասուպների քանակի կտրուկ աճ, և այդ ժամանակ Լեոնիդները հանդիսանում են ամենաառատ ասուպային հոսքը՝ ժամում 1000-ից ավելի (երբեմն մինչև 3000) ասուպ: Ասուպների այդպիսի հեղեղ դիտվեց 1999թ. և շարունակվեց 2000-2002թթ., իսկ հաջորդն սպասվում է 2032 թվա կանին, սակայն ասուպների աճ (ժամում մինչև 100-150) կարող է դիտվել և այլ տարիներին:
Լեոնիդների ասուպային հոսքը հայտնաբերվել է 1833թ. նոյեմբերի 12-13-ի գիշերը, և այդ օրը համարվում է ընդհանրապես ասուպային աստղագիտության ծնունդը: Հետաքրքրական է, որ հետադարձ հաշվարկով աստղագետները գտել են, որ դարեր առաջ (սկսած 6-րդ դարից) նույնպես գրանցվել է Լեոնիդների ասուպային հոսքը, սակայն այն ժամանակ լիարժեք չի հասկացվել և չի բացատրվել:
Ասուպային հոսքերն առաջանում են, երբ Երկիրը, Արեգակի շուրջն իր ուղեծրով շարժվելով, հանդիպում է որպես կանոն գիսավորների կողմից առաջացրած երկնաքարերի խմբի, և վերջիններս մեծ (մի քանի տասնյակ կամ հարյուրավոր հազար կմ/ժամ) արագությամբ թափանցելով Երկրի մթնոլորտ, այրվում են և «ընկնող աստղեր» հիշեցնող հետքեր թողնում, որոնք կարող են մինչև մի քանի վայրկյան երևալ երկնակամարի վրա: Երկրի մթնոլորտի համեմատաբար խիտ շերտերում՝ սովորաբար Երկրի մակերևույթից 50-130 կմ բարձրության վրա, ասուպներն այրվում են, և միայն նրանցից առավել խոշորները կարող են ասնել Երկրի մակերևույթին: Հատկապես առատ ասուպային հոսքերը մարդիկ անվանել են «աստղային անձրև» կամ «աստղաթափ»:
Ինչպես և բոլոր երկնային մարմինները և երևույթները, ասուպները նույնպես ավելի լավ են դիտվում բնակելի վայրերից հեռու: Երևանի լուսավորությունը խիստ դժվարեցնում է ասուպների դիտելը:
