Երկրի ձգողականության օրենքը Նյուտոնը հայտնագործել է ծառից իր գլխին ընկած խնձորի շնորհիվ:

Իրականում այդպես չէ:

Բանն այն է, որ այն ժամանակ հայտնի անգլիացի բնախույզ և գյուտարար Ռոբերտ Հուկը հայտարարում էր, որ Նյուտոնը իրենից գողացել է այս օրենքի հայտնագործությունը, և որպեսզի ապացուցի, որ ինքն ավելի շուտ է հայտնագործել օրենքը, Նյուտոնը հորինել է այս լեգենդը: Այս առթիվ Նյուտոնը 1686 թվականին գրել է Էդմոն Հալլեյին. «Թղթերում՝ գրված ավելի քան 15 տարի առաջ (հստակ թիվը ես չեմ կարող ասել, սակայն, ցանկացած դեպքում, դա եղել է մինչ իմ նամակագրությունը Օլդենբուրգի հետ), ես արտահայտել եմ մոլորակների ձգողականության քառակուսային հակադարձ համեմատականությունը դեպի Արեգակ՝ կախված հեռավորությունից, հաշվարկել եմ երկրի ծանրության և Լուսնի՝ դեպի Երկրի կենտրոնը հարաբերությունը, թեկուզ և ոչ այնքան ճշգրիտ»: Նյուտոնի կողմից նշված անճշտությունը ծագում էր նրանից, որ Երկրի չափսերը և ազատ անկման արագության մեծությունը Նյուտոնը վերցրել էր Գալիլեյի «Մեխանիկա» աշխատությունից, որտեղ դրանք նշվում էին զգալի սխալով: Ավելի ուշ ստանալով Պիկարի ավելի ճշգրիտ տվյալները՝ Նյուտոնը վերջնականապես համոզվեց իր տեսության ճշմարտացիության մեջ։ Հանրահայտ լեգենդն այն մասին, թե ձգողականության օրենքը Նյուտոնը բացահայտել է ծառի ճյուղից խնձորի անկման շնորհիվ, ինչպես նաև «Նյուտոնի խնձոր» արտահայտությունը առաջին անգամ նշում է Նյուտոնի կենսագիր Վիլ յամ Ստրույկլին իր՝ «Հիշողություններ Նյուտոնի կյանքի մասին» գրքում՝ 1752 թվականին: Ըստ նրա, մի օր ընթրիքից հետո եղանակը տաք էր, և ինքը Նյուտոնի հետ դուրս է եկել այգի և խնձորենու ստվերի տակ խմել թեյ։ Նյուտոնը ասել է իրեն, որ ձգողականության մասին միտքը իր գլխում ծագել է, երբ նա հենց նույն ձևով նստել է ծառի տակ։ Այն ժամանակ ինքը գտնվել է բարձր տրամադրության մեջ, երբ անսպասելի ճյուղից խնձոր է ընկել. ինքը մտածել է՝ իսկ ինչո՞ւ են խնձորները միշտ գետնին ընկնում ուղղահայաց։ Այս լեգենդը հետագայում հանրահայտ դարձավ Վոլտերի շնորհիվ։ Իրականում, ինչպես երևում է Նյուտոնի աշխատանքային տետրերից, նրա համընդհանուր ձգողականության տեսությունը զարգացրել է աստիճանաբար։ Նրա մյուս կենսագիրը՝ Հենրի Փեմբերտոնը, բերում է Նյուտոնի հիմնավորումները (առանց հիշատակելու խնձորը) ավելի մանրամասն. «Համեմատելով մի քանի մոլորակների ընթացքները և նրանց հեռավորությունը մինչև Արեգակ, նա հայտնաբերեց, որ… այդ ուժը պետք է փոքրանա քառակուսային համամասնությամբ հեռավորության մեծացմանը զուգընթաց։ Այլ խոսքով, Նյուտոնը հայտնաբերել է, որ Արեգակի շուրջ մոլորակների պտույտների տևողությունը նրանց միջև եղած հեռավորությունից արտահայտվում է «հակադարձ քառակուսային բանաձևով» ձգողականության օրենքի համաձայն։ Ձգողականության օրենքի վերջնական ձևակերպումը, որը մտավ դասագրքեր, Նյուտոնը ձևակերպել է ավելի ուշ՝ այն բանից հետո, երբ նրան պարզ դարձան մեխանիկայի օրենքները։ Ընդ որում, նա չի էլ առարկել, որ ձգողականության օրենքի ճշգրիտ ձևակերպումը տվել է Ռոբերտ Հուկը, սակայն պնդել է, որ այդ մասին ինքն ավելի շուտ է մտածել, երբ գլխին խնձոր է ընկել:
