Մարդու կողմից հայտնագործված գերձայնային արագություն զարգացնող (ձայնային պատնեշը հաղթահարող) առաջին սարքը ստեղծվել է միայն 19-րդ դարում. դա կա՛մ ինքնաթիռն է, կա՛մ էլ փամփուշտը:
Իրականում այդպես չէ:
Գերձայնային արագություն զարգացնող (ձայնային պատնեշը հաղթահարող) առաջին սարքը ստեղծվել է մոտավորապես 7000 տարի առաջ Չինաստանում: Դա սովորական մտրակն է: Մտրակը փայտե կոթի վրա ամրացված կաշվի կամ հյուսված կաշեփոկերի շերտ է՝ նախատեսված մարդկանց և կենդանիներին (առաջին հերթին՝ ձիուն) հարվածելու համար: Ի սկզբանե մտրակներ պատրաստվել են միայն կաշվից, հետագայում այդ նպատակի համար սկսել են օգտագործել նաև հյուսված ամուր ու հաստ թելեր կամ այլ նյութեր: Մտրակով հարվածելիս, երբ ձեռքը կտրուկ շարժում է կատարում, մտրակի կոթի մոտ առաջանում է ալիք՝ աղեղ, որը արագորեն տարածվում է մտրակի ամբողջ երկարությամբ: Քանի որ մտրակը աստիճանաբար նեղանում է, ստացվում է այնպես, որ առաջացած ալիքը անընդհատ արագացում է ստանում, ընդ որում՝ այդ ալիքի արագությունը մտրակի ծայրին արդեն համարյա տասն անգամ արագ է լինում նախնական արագությունից և կարող է կազմել 1194 կիլոմետր /ժամ և ավելի արագություն (ձայնի արագությունը 1191,6 կիլոմետր /ժամ է): Մտրակի թափահարման վերջում լսվում է բնորոշ ճտտոց: Թվում է, թե սա արդյունք է մտրակի և մտրակահարվող մակերեսի (օրինակ՝ մարդու կամ ձիու մաշկի) շփման: Իրականում այս ճտտոցը առաջանում է հարվածի վերջում մտրակի երկարությամբ առաջացած ալիքի ձայնային պատնեշը հաղթահարելու ժամանակ: Այս ամենը պարզ է դարձել միայն 1929 թվականին, երբ սկսվեց օգտագործվել դանդաղեցված լուսանկարահանում:
Մտրակը հին աշխարհում սիմվոլիկ նշանակություն է ունեցել: Այն խորհրդանշել է իշխանություն, կառավարում, պատժում: Մտրակը նույնացվել է անասնապահության հետ, իսկ գավազանը՝ հողագործության: Սա համարվել է տղամարդկայնության, նրա պտղատվության սկիզբ: Եթե մարդը չէր կարողանում հղիացնել կնոջը, նրան մտրակում էին: Համարվել է նաև, որ այն պտղատու է դարձնում նաև կանանց, օրինակ՝ Հռոմում նորահարսին մի քանի անգամ հարվածում էին մտրակով: Ոմանք մտրակում էին անգամ պտղատու ծառերը, որ բերքը առատ լինի: Քրիստոնեության մեջ ևս մտրակը ձեռք է բերել սիմվոլիկ նշանակություն, բայց արդեն որպես ինքնախարազանման, ինքնամաքրման գործիք:
Մտրակահարումը, որպես պատժի միջոց, տարածված է եղել բոլոր ժողովուրդների մեջ և օգտագործվել է մինչև 19-րդ դարը: Ընդ որում, կախված կատարած հանցանքից, նշանակվել են մտրակահարման տարբեր թվեր՝ մի քանի հարվածից մինչև հարյուրավորներ: Ռուսաստանում մտրակահարումը, որպես պատժի ձև,արգելել է Ալեքսանդր Առաջինը, քանի որ, ըստ նրա, սա շատ անմարդկային պատժի ձև է:
