Օձեր հմայողների (կախարդողների) երաժշտական գործիքների նվագի ներքո օձերը, երաժշտությամբ հմայված, պարում են:

Իրականում այդպես չէ:

Դուրս գալով կողովից՝ օձերն այնքան էլ ուշադրություն չեն դարձնում երաժշտությանը, չնայած խուլ չեն. իրականում նրանք արձագանքում են երաժշտական գործիքի (ֆլեյտայի) շարժումներին: Օձերը չունեն թմբկաթաղանթ և արտաքին ականջ, բայց նրանք հաջողությամբ զգում են տատանումները (վիբրացիա), որոնք նրանց հասնում են գետնից: Բացի այդ, իրենց ներքին ականջով նրանք նաև լսում են: Իհարկե, օձերը քիչ են արձագանքում անգամ ուժեղ աղմուկին: Նախկինում համարվում էր, որ նրանք ընդհանրապես չեն լսում, բայց վերջին ժամանակներս կատարված հետազոտությունները պարզել են, որ լսում են: Պարզվում է, որ նրանց լսողությունը հարմարված է այն հաճախականության ձայներին և վիբրացիային, որը առաջացնում են խոշոր կենդանիները, ինչը հասկանալի է. օձին պետք է միայն, որ ինչ-որ մեկի կողմից չտրորվի, իսկ երաժշտությունը նրանց համար էական չէ: Կողովից դուրս եկած «հմայված» օձը ընդամենը պաշտպանական դիրք է ընդունում՝ «կանգնում» է և սկսում է գլուխը շարժել տարուբերվող երաժշտական գործիքին համահունչ: Կոնկրետ կոբրայի համար այս դիրքը ոչ թե հարձակողական է, այլ պաշտպանողական: 

Բեդեն կամ օձերի հմայումը (կախարդումը) բավականին հին և հետաքրքիր մասնագիտություն է Հնդկաստանում: Այս արվեստը նախկինում եղել է անգամ հին Եգիպտոսում: Օձերի հմայման արվեստը մեծ տարածում է ստացել 20-րդ դարում և նպատակ ունի գրավել և տուրիստների մեծ քանակ բերել Հնդկաստան: Կան բավականին հանրահայտ օձահմաներ: Անգամ նրանց հատուկ համաժողով գոյություն ունի, որտեղ հավաքվում են այդ մասնագետները և քննարկում ընթացիկ հարցեր, իրականացնում փորձի փոխանակություն: 

Իրականում օձեր հմայողի մասնագիտությունը բավականին վտանգավոր է: Հնարավոր է, որ օձը խայթի հմայողին, ինչը հաճախ մահացու արդյունք է ունենում: Սովորաբար այս արվեստի համար օգտագործվում են կոբրաներ, որոնք շատ թունավոր են և վտանգավոր անգամ այն դեպքում, երբ նրանց թունավոր ատամները հեռացված են լինում: Այստեղ կարևոր է նաև այն, որ հմայողը կոբրայից անհրաժեշտ հեռավորություն է պահպանում, քանի որ կոբրան կարող է միայն իր երկարությանը հավասար տարածության վրա հարված հասցնել, մոտավորապես այնպես, որ մարդը, ասենք, սեղանին կարող է հարվածել միայն իր ձեռքի հեռավորությամբ: Բացի այն, որ կոբրան հետևում է երաժշտական գործիքի (ֆլեյտայի) շարժումներին, օձ հմայողները ևս մի քանի հնարքներ են օգտագործում, որ օձը «պարի»: Մասնավորապես, նրանք ոտքը տակտով հարվածում են գետնին, որի վիբրացիան ստիպում է կոբրային ձգվել և պաշտպանական դիրք ընդունել: Նաև արդեն վարժեցրած կոբրաներին լավ պարեցնելու համար հմայողը սկսում է նվագելու հետ երաժշտական գործիքի ծայրով թեթև հարվածել նրան, հարվածներից կոբրաները սկսում են խուսափել և արդյունքում «պարում» են: 

«Պարել ուրիշի դուդուկի տակ» արտահայտությունը ծագել է հենց օձեր հմայողներից: Փաստորեն պարզվում է, որ այս արտահայտության տակ թաքնված է այն, որ մարդը չնայած պարում է, բայց իրականում չի լսում երաժշտությունը, նա պարում է ինքնապաշտպանվելով, քանի որ «նվագողը» նրա վրա «ոտք է թափ տալիս» ու գլխին հարվածներ հասցնում: Այստեղ ամենավիրավորականն այն չէ, որ այդ ամենը կատարվում է, այլ այն, որ այդ պարողին համեմատում են օձի հետ:
