ՄԱԿ-ի Գլխավոր ասամբլեան 2016 թվականի դեկտեմբերի 6-ին ընդունված № 71/90 բանաձեւով հունիսի 30-ը Աստերոիդի միջազգային օր է հայտարարել՝ «աստերոիդների հետ բախման վտանգների մասին հասարակության տեղեկացվածությունը բարձրացնելու նպատակով», գրում է Calend.ru-ն: 

Նոր տիեզերական տոնը որոշվել է նշել հունիսի 30-ին՝ «Սիբիրում Տունգուսի ֆենոմենի» օրը: 1908 թվականին զանգվածային աստերոիդային աղետ է տեղի ունեցել՝ Երկրի հետ բախվել է Տունգուսի երկնաքարը: Ջրածնային ռումբին նմանվող պայթյունի ալիքը գրանցել են տարբեր երկրների գիտնականները: 2000 քառ/մ տարածքում ծառեր էին տապալվել, սատկել էին կենդանիներ, մարդիկ էին տուժել: Սակայն գիտնականները մինչ օրս այս իրադարձության կապակցությամբ միասնական տեսակետի չեն հասել:

Նոր օր ստեղծելու նախաձեռնությունը պատկանում է Տիեզերական հետազոտողների ասոցիացիային, այն աջակցել  է խաղաղ նպատակներով տիեզերական տարածքն օգտագործելու կոմիտեն: Իսկ օրվա հիմնական գաղափարախոսներն են ռոք երաժիշտ, «Queen» խմբի կիթառահար եւ աստղաֆիզիկոս Բրայան Մեյը եւ ռեժիսոր Գրիգ Ռիխթերսը: Նրանց համագործակցությունը սսկվեց 2014-ի փետրվարին, երբ Բրայան Մեյը Լոնդոնի վրա ընկած խոշոր աստերոիդի մասին Ռիխթերսի ֆիլմի համար երաժշտություն  գրեց: Արդյունքում էլ ծնվեց Աստերոիդի օրվա գաղափարը: 

Աստերոիդն Արեգակնային համակարգի համեմատաբար փոքր երկնային մարմին է, որը ուղեծրով պտույտ է գործում Արեգակի շուրջ: Այն չափով եւ զանգվածով զգալիորեն զիջում է մոլորակներին: Տերմինի հստակ սահմանում մինչ այժմ չկա, մինչ 2006 թվականը աստերոիդները կոչվել են նաեւ փոքր մոլորակներ:
