Սովապահությունը դանդաղեցնում է ծերացումն ու մարդուն ավելի երկարակյաց է դարձնում, կարծում են Հարավային Կարոլինայի համալսարանի փորձագետները: Սովապահաությունը, նրանց կարծիքով, նվազեցնում է նաեւ քաղցկեղի, սրտի հիվանդությունների ու դիաբետի հավանականությունը:

Բավական է կրճատել Ձեր կողմից օգտագործվող կալորիաների քանակը կիսով չափ ամսական 5 օր շարունակ, եւ դա Ձեզ ավելի երկարակյաց կդարձնի, պնդում են գիտնականները:

Նրանք նկատել են, որ այն կամավորները, որոնք ամսվա ընթացքում մի քանի օր շարունակ երկու անգամ ավելի քիչ էին սնվում, քան սովորաբար, ծերացման ավելի քիչ հատկանիշներ էին դրսեւորում, ինչպես նաեւ ավելի հազվադեպ էին տառապում դիաբետով, սրտի հիվանդություններով եւ քաղցկեղով՝ սովապահությանը չհետեւող մարդկանց համեմատ: Այս դիաետայի օգտակար ազդեցությունը պահպանվում էր նույնիսկ նորմալ սննդակարգին վերադառնալուց հետո:

Ավելի վաղ իրականացված հետազոտությունները ցույց տվեցին, որ կարճատեւ սովապահությունը, որի դեպքում մարդը բավարարվում է միայն ջրով, դրական են ազդում առողջության վրա: Սակայն այդ սովապահությանը հետեւելը գրեթե անհնար է տարեց մարդկանց կամ հիվանդների համար: Այդ պատճառով գիտնականները սննդակարգ են մշակել, որը սովապահության նույն էֆեկտն է ապահովում, սակայն մարդը ստանում է միներալների ու վիտամինների անհրաժեշտ քանակը, ինչը թույլ է տալիս նվազեցնել բացասական ազդեցությունը:

Այս դիետան, որին մարդիկ հետեւում էին բժիշկների վերահսկողության պայմաններում, նվազեցնում էր կալորիաների քանակը 34-54 տոոկոսով: Առաջին օրվա ընթացքում կամավորները միայն 1090 կալորիա էին օգտագործել, իսկ մնացած 5 օրվա ընթացքում՝ 725: Ավելի ուշ մի քանի շաբաթ շարունակ բոլորը վերադարձան  նորմալ սննդակարգին, իսկ այնուհետեւ կրկնեցին սովապահությունը: Երեք ամսվա ընթացքում շաքարի պարունակության մակարդակը նրանց օրգանիզմում նվազեց 10 տոկոսով, իսկ ծերացման հետ կապված ինսուլինանման աճի գործոն-1 նյութի շրջանառությունը կրճատվեց 24 տոկոսով:
