Պատմական ուսումնասիրությունները փաստում են, որ դեռևս հին Եգիպտոսում  և հին Հռոմում մատնեմատը մարդկանց համար հատուկ նշանակություն ուներ: Ընդունված էր համարել, որ դրա միջով անցնում է մի երակ, որը հենց այդ մատը կապում է սրտի հետ: Երակը հենց այդպես էլ կոչվում էր` «սրտի երակ»: Այդ մատին մատին մատանու առկայությունը խոսում էր այն մասին, որ «հաճախորդը զբաղված է»: Իսկ հռոմեացիների մոտ ձախ ձեռքը անհաջող էր համարվում, ուստի նրանք առաջինն էին, որ սկսեցին մատանին կրել միայն աջ ձեռքին:

 

Հնդիկները  ևս աջ ձեռքը «անհաջող» էին համարում, այդ պատճառով բոլոր մատանիները նրանք կրում էին աջ ձեռքին: Այսօր այս սահմանափակումը այդքան էլ խիստ դրված չէ:

 

Աշխարհի մի շարք երկրներում՝ Գերամնիայում, Հոլանդիայում, չամուսնացած երիտասարդները մատանի էին կրում ձախ ձեռքին, իսկ ամունությունից հետո՝ աջին, դրանով իսկ հաստատելով իրենց կարգավիճակի փոփոխությունը: Այս սովորույթը հատկանշական է Թուրքիայի, Լիբանանի, Սիրիայի, ինչպես նաև Բրազիլիայի ժողովուրդներին:

 

Եվրոպական ծագում ունեցող նորապսակների հարսանեկան արարողությունների ժամանակ փեսացուն ոսկե մատանին դնում է հարսանացուի աջ ձեռքի ցուցամատին, քանի որ այն ամենակարևոր մատն է համարվում: Հարսանիքից հետո թույլատրվում է մատանին տեղափոխել ցուցամատին մատանեմատին:

 

Շրի-Լանկայում հարսնացուն և փեսան մատանիներ են կրում հակառակ ձեռքերին, կինը՝ աջին, տղամարդը՝ ձախին:
Հետաքրքրական է, որ 18-րդ դարում բոլոր երկրներում գերադասում էին ամուսանական մատանի կրել աջ ձեռքին, և ամուսնական մատանի կրում էին միայն կանայք: Տղամարդիկ ամուսնական մատանիներ սկսեցին կրել միայն Երկրորդ համաշխարհային պատերազմից հետո՝ որպես զինվորներին հիշեցում ընտանիքի և տան մասին:
Ամուսնական մատանին ձախ ձեռքին կրելու սովորույթը բավականին նոր է: Անցյալ դարի մի շարք աղբյուրներում նշվում է, որ այդ փոփոխություն պայմանավորված է կնոջ՝ իր ամուսնու հանդեպ ունեցած հարգանքի արտահայտությամբ:
