18-րդ դարի սկզբին եվրոպական մշակույթի պատմության վրա մեծապես ազդել է այնպիսի իրադարձություն, ինչպիսին է դաշնամուրի ստեղծումը: Արևմտյան քաղաքակրթության երաժշտական մշակույթը ամբողջովին փոխվել է դաշնամուրի հայտնվելու հետևանքով: Պատմությունից հայտնի է, որ միջնադարում եղել են ստեղնաշարային երաժշտական գործիքներ:

Նրանցից ամենահինն երգեհոնն է, որը փողային-ստեղնաշարային գործիք է և չունի լարեր, բայց ունի բազմաթիվ խողովակներ: Ահա թե ինչու կարելի է ասել, որ դաշնամուրը երգեհոնի ուղղակի հետնորդը չէ: 18-րդ դարի կոմպոզիտորներն ու երաժիշտները հասկանում էին, որ իրենց պետք է ինչ-որ նոր երաժշտական գործիք, որն իր հնչեղությամբ չի զիջում ջութակին:

Կար անհրաժեշտություն այնպիսի երաժշտական գործիքի, որի դինամիկ տիրույթը բավականաչափ մեծ լիներ: Նման պահանջները կարողացավ կյանքի կոչել երաժշտական գործիքներ արտադրող Մեդիչի ընտանիքի իտալացի վարպետ Բարտոլոմեո Քրիստոֆորին։

Հենց նրա՝ 1709 թվականին ստեղծած երաժշտական գործիքից էլ սկսվել է դաշնամուրի պատմությունը: Իր երաժշտական գործիքին Քրիստոֆորին անվանեց «gravicembalo col piano e forte», որը թարգմանվում է որպես «ստեղնաշարային գործիք, որը բարձրաձայն ու նրբագեղ է նվագում»: 

Ավելի ուշ այդ անունը կրճատվեց՝ դառնալով մեկ բառ՝ piano (pianoforte)` «դաշնամուր»: 1916 և 1917 թվականներին նմանատիպ գործիքներ ստեղծեցին ֆրանսիացի Ժան Մարիուսը և գերմանացի Քրիստոֆեր Գոթլիեբ Շրետրերը:

Քրիստոֆորիի շատ պարզ դաշնամուրը ուներ ստեղներ, վուշե մուրճիկներ և ստեղների հետադարձիչ: Նա չուներ դոմպֆեր և ոտնակ:

Ստեղնին հարվածելիս մուրճիկը հարվածում էր լարին, որից էլ այն սկսում էր տատանվել և ձայն արձակել։

Դա այն վիբրացիան է, որն առաջացնում է կլավիկորդը կամ կլավեսինը: Մուրճիկը, շնորհիվ հետադարձ մեխանիզմի, կպած չէր մնում լարին, հետ էր գնում և ընդունում իր ելակետային դիրքը, որի արդյունքում չէր խլացնում լարի վիբրացիոն ձայնը։ Երաժշտական այս գործիքի դինամիկ դիապազոնը և ռեզոնանս առաջացնելու հատկությունը հենց այն որակներն են, որոնք տարբերում են դաշնամուրը այլ երաժշտական գործիքներից։ 

Գործիքի համարյա զանգային հնչեղությունը հնարավոր է դառնում շնորհիվ նրա պողպատե շրջանակի և փայտյա մարմնի: Դաշնամուրը իր նախորդներից տարբերվում էր իր ձայնով, որը կարող է լինել ոչ միայն ցածր կամ բարձր, այլ նաև կրեշենդո և դիմունեդո ստեղծող՝ ունակ դինամիկան աստիճանաբար կամ հանկարծակի փոխելու:

Չնայած այն բանին, որ դաշնամուրը ընդամենը 300 տարվա պատմություն ունի, այնուամենայնիվ, այս գործիքի ստեղծումը երաժշտական արվեստի շրջադարձային կետ է հանդիսանում: Ամբողջ եվրոպական երաժշտությունը, որը համաշխարհային մշակույթի կարևորագույն մասն է, փոխել է իր բնույթը այս գյուտի շնորհիվ:

Արդեն երեք հարյուր տարի է, որ բոլոր մեծ ու տաղանդավոր կոմպոզիտորները ստեղծագործում են դաշնամուրի համար ու դաշնամուրի միջոցով: Նրանցից շատերը հայտնի են դարձել հենց իրենց դաշնամուրային աշխատանքներով:

Դաշնամուրի աճող ժողովրդականության հետ մեկտեղ ժամանակի ընթացքում սկսեցին հայտնվել վիրտուոզ դաշնակահարներ: Մի խոսքով, դաշնամուրը չջնջվող հետք է թողել համաշխարհային մշակույթի պատմության մեջ՝ դառնալով մարդկության պատմության ամենակարևոր երաժշտական գործիքներից մեկը:
