Հակագազը մարդու շնչառական օրգանները, աչքերն ու դեմքը թունավոր նյութերից, ռադիոակտիվ փոշուց և օդում գազի կամ գոլորշու ձևով գտնվող այլ նյութերից պաշտպանող անհատական միջոց է։ 

Հակագազերը լինում են զտող (ներշնչվող օդը զտում և մաքրում է վնասակար նյութերից) և մեկուսացնող (շնչառական օրգանները լրիվ մեկուսացվում են արտաքին միջավայրից, իսկ շնչառությունը կատարվում է հակագազի պարկուճում ռեգեներացվող օդով)։ 

Վերջինս օգտագործվում է այն դեպքում, երբ զտող հակագազը պաշտպանություն չի ապահովում, օրինակ՝ շրջապատում թթվածնի պակասի դեպքում։

 Շնչուղիները վնասակար և թունավոր նյութերից պաշտպանելու միջոցներ հայտնի են եղել հին ժամանակներից: Միջնադարում և ավելի ուշ ժամանակներում ժանտախտի համաճարակների ժամանակ բժիշկները կենսաբանական պաշտպանության համար օգտագործել են թռչնի գլխի տեսքով դիմակներ, որոնց մեջ հատուկ կարմիր բաժակներ են եղել՝ լցված բուժիչ բույսերով, սակայն հայտնի չէ, թե արդյո՞ք այդ մեթոդը արդյունավետ է եղել: 

Բացի դա, օրինակ՝ 19-րդ դարի առաջին կեսին Սանկտ Պետերբուրգի Սուրբ Իսակևսկի տաճարի գմբեթները ոսկեզօծելիս սնդիկի գոլորշուց պաշտպանվելու համար բանվորներն օգտագործել են ապակե սաղավարտներ, որոնց մեջ օդ է մղվել խողովակներով: 

1849 թվականին ամերիկացի Հասլետը ստանում է արտոնագիր իր ստեղծած հակագազի նախատիպի համար, որը նա անվանել էր «թոքային պրոտեկտոր»: 

Սարքը հիմնված էր վուշի միջոցով վնասակար նյութերի ֆիլտրման վրա և ուներ մուտքային և ելքային փականներ: Այնուամենայնիվ, իսկական հակագազերի պատմությունը սկսվում է Առաջին համաշխարհային պատերազմի տարիներից: 

Դա պայմանավորված էր հակամարտող բանակների կողմից մարտական թունավոր գազերի լայնորեն օգտագործմամբ: Մարտական թունավոր գազեր առաջին անգամ օգտագործվել են 1915 թվականին ֆրանս-գերմանական, ապա ռուս- գերմանական ճակատներում: Սկզբում դրանցից պաշտպանվելու համար օգտագործվել են թանզիֆե դիմակներ, որոնք ներծծված են եղել տարբեր նյութերով, բայց ապացուցվել է, որ մարտական պայմաններում դրանք ցածր արդյունավետություն ունեն: 

1915 թվականին թունավոր գազերից պաշտպանվելու համար հայտնի ռուս գիտնական-քիմիկոս Զելինսկին առաջարկել է օգտագործել ակտիվացված փայտածուխ, որի մեջ հատուկ մշակման միջոցով ստեղծվում են մեծաքանակ ծակոտկեններ: 

«Եռանկյունի» գործարանի տեխնոլոգ Կումմանտովի կողմից էլ մշակվել է հատուկ ռետինե դիմակ, որը կարող էր պաշտպանել դեմքը թունավոր նյութերի ազդեցությունից: Հենց այս սարքն էլ, որը բաղկացած էր ռետինե դիմակից և ֆիլտրի տուփից, ստացել է հակագազ անունը: 

«Զելինսկի-Կումմանտով» հակագազերը փորձություն են անցել Անտանտի երկրներում 1916 թվականին: 

Առաջին համաշխարհային պատերազմի տարբեր ճակատներում դրանց օգտագործման արդյունքում կտրուկ նվազել է քիմիական գրոհների հետևանքով առաջացող զոհերի թիվը: 

Հակագազերը ներկայումս էլ դեռ օգտագործվում են տարբեր երկրների բանակներում և խաղաղ բնակչության պաշտպանության համար:
