Երևի թե աշխարհի ամենահայտնի և հասանելի սեղանի խաղը շախմատն է: Սեղանի խաղերի շարքում շախմատն առաջինն է, որին պաշտոնապես տրվել է սպորտային խաղի կարգավիճակ: Ընդ որում, ներկայումս շախմատը չի սահմանափակվում միայն այդ խաղի սիրահարների զբաղմունք լինելով. այն այսօր հայտնի է նաև պրոֆեսիոնալ բազմաթիվ մրցաշարերով, որտեղ շրջանառվում են հսկայական գումարներ: 

Եվրոպական երկրները, Ասիան և Արևելքը իրենց ներդրումն են ունեցել շախմատի զարգացման պատմության մեջ: Խաղն առաջին անգամ հայտնվել է Հնդկաստանում որպես ռազմական գործողությունների ուսուցման ռազմավարության և մարտավարության մեթոդ:

 Ըստ մի հին լեգենդի, Սեսսա անունով հնդիկ մաթեմատիկոսը խաղը ներկայացրել է հարուստ ռաջային, որին այն շատ է դուր եկել, և իր երախտագիտությունը հայտնելու համար նա խոստացել է Սեսսային վճարել այնքան, ինչքան ցանկանա: 

Զարմանալի է, բայց մաթեմատիկոսը ընտրել է վարձատրություն բրնձի կամ ցորենի հատիկների տեսքով: Սեսսան ասել է, որ կվերցնի այնքան հատիկ, որքան կտեղավորվի շախմատի տախտակի վրա, բայց Ռաջան տախտակի առաջին վանդակին պետք է դնի մեկ հատիկ, իսկ հաջորդ վանդակին դրանից երկու անգամ ավելի և այդպես շարունակ: 

Փաստորեն մաթեմատիկոսի ուղեղը լավ է աշխատել, քանի որ այդ սկզբունքով շախմատի տախտակին դրված հատիկների ընդհանուր քաշը կազմում է գրեթե 1,2 տրիլիոն տոննա: Պարզ է, որ նույնիսկ հարուստ ռաջան ի վիճակի չէր վճարել նման գին, և նա ստիպված դրժել է տված խոստումը: Շախմատը զգալիորեն փոխակերպվել է՝ հայտնվելով Արևելքում:

 Փոփոխություններ տեղի են ունեցել շախմատի խաղաքարերի տեսքի մեջ, արդյունքում շախմատի քարերը դարձել են ներկայիս աբստրակտ քարերի նման: Շախմատի խաղաքարերի պարզեցման շնորհիվ դրանց արտադրությունը ավելի քիչ ժամանակ և աշխատուժ է պահանջել, հետևաբար շախմատը էժանացել է: Արդյունքում շախմատ խաղալը դադարել է լինել ռազմավարական վարժանք ազնվականների համար և հասանելի է դարձել հասարակ մարդկանց: 

Այդ ժամանակվանից շախմատը դարձել է ստանդարտ սեղանի խաղ: Եվրոպայում շախմատի տարածումն ու ներդրումը անցել է փշոտ ուղիով: Խաղն անմիջապես արգելվել է եկեղեցու կողմից: Բայց դա միայն ավելի մեծ հետաքրքրություն է առաջացրել շարքային քաղաքացիների և ֆեոդալների մոտ: Որպես արդյունք՝ շախմատն արդեն 15-րդ դարում աշխարհի ամենատարածված և հայտնի խաղն է դարձել: 

Շախմատն իր զարգացման ընթացքում փոխվում է անընդհատ: Մշակվում են նոր կանոններ, հայտնվում են նոր ռազմավարական հնարքներ և քայլեր: Ներկայումս յուրաքանչյուրը կարող է բացարձակապես հանգիստ շախմատ խաղալ տանը համակարգչով կամ համացանցով: 

Անցկացվում է նույնիսկ առցանց շախմատի միջազգային մրցաշար: Իսկ շախմատի պատմությունը դեռ չի ավարտվել, քանի որ այդ խաղի սիրահարների և երկրպագուների պրպտուն մտքերը անպայման կներկայացնեն նոր և հետաքրքիր նորարարություններ: Հայաստանում շախմատը հայտնի է դեռ վաղ միջնադարից: Այն երբեմն անվանում են նաև ճատրակ: Հովսեփ Օրբելին և Կամիլլա Տրևերը պնդում են, որ Հայաստանում շախմատը հայտնի է դեռևս 9-րդ դարից, երբ Հայաստանը արաբական տիրապետության տակ էր: 

Ըստ նրանց՝ շախմատը Հայաստան են բերել արաբները Հնդկաստանից: 1967 թվականին կատարված հնագիտական աշխատանքների ժամանակ միջնադարյան Հայաստանի մայրաքաղաք Դվինում հայտնաբերվել են շախմատի խաղաքարեր: Շախմատի մասին հիշատակումներ կան Երևանի Մեսրոպ Մաշտոցի անվան Մատենադարանում պահվող 1100-1200-ականների հայերեն ձեռագրերում, ներառյալ 13-րդ դարի Վարդան Արևելցու ձեռագիրը։ 

Սակայն շախմատը մեր երկրում առավել լայն ճանաչում է ստացել ԽՍՀՄ տարիներին: Այսօր էլ մոտ երեք միլիոն բնակչությամբ Հայաստանը համարվում է աշխարհի ամենաուժեղ շախմատային երկրներից մեկը: Հայաստանն աշխարհում մեկ շնչի հաշվով ամենաշատ գրոսմայստերներ ունեցող երկրներից է:
