Ժամանակին ցանկացած տնային տնտեսուհի անպայման ուներ այնպիսի կարևոր իր, ինչպես մատնոցը: Ճիշտ է, գուցե որոշ տներում դեռ գտնվեն մատնոցներ, սակայն այժմ դրանք ըստ էության գործնականում շատ քիչ են օգտագործվում, իսկ հնաոճ իրերի խանութներում կարելի է գտնել այդ իրի առանձին օրինակներ, որոնք իրենց վրա կրում են մանրանկարչության տարրեր: 

Այդուամենայնիվ, որոշ երկրներում մասնագիտացված խանութներում առաջարկվում է մատնոցների մեծ ընտրություն: Մատնոցի պատմությունը սկիզբ է առել հնագույն քաղաքակրթությունների ժամանակներից, և դա են հաստատում հնագետների գտածոները: 

Ճիշտ է, մատնոցը իր նախնական ձևով տարբերվել է իր ժամանակակից «հետնորդից», բայց օգտագործման նպատակը եղել է նույնը՝ կարելիս չծակել մատներն ասեղով: Մատնոցներ են հայտնաբերվել Պոմպեի պեղումների ժամանակ, ինչպես նաև Սկյութական գերեզմաններում: Ժամանակակից մատնոցներին նման մատնոցների ամենահին նմուշները հայտնաբերվել են Չինաստանում: 

Առաջին չինական մատնոցները պատրաստվել են հաստ կաշվից մ.թ.ա. 3-րդ դարում: Այնուհետև սկսել են դրանք պատրաստել պղնձից և բրոնզից: 

Հարուստ մարդիկ իրենց թույլ են տվել ունենալ արծաթյա և ոսկյա մատնոցներ: Պատմության մեջ դերձակի այս գործիքի առաջին գրավոր հիշատակումները վերաբերում են 12-րդ դարին: Այն ժամանակ մատնոցները պատրաստվել են ձեռքով՝ պղնձից, երկաթից, բրոնզից՝ ձուլելու կամ կոփման մեթոդներով: 

Գերմանիան դարձել է այս ապրանքի արտադրության առաջատար, և անգամ կազմակերպվել է մատնոցագործների գիլդիա: Նրանց է պատկանել լատունից մատնոցներ պատրաստելու հեղինակային իրավունքը: 

Դա տեղի է ունեցել 14-րդ դարում, որից հետո մատնոցների արտադրության գործընթացը տարիների ընթացքում անընդհատ բարելավվել է: Մատնոցների գործարանային արտադրությունը սկսվել է 19-րդ դարում: Միևնույն ժամանակ ձևավորվել է ավանդույթ՝ նվիրել գեղեցիկ մատնոցներ: 

Բնականաբար, նկարներով, թանկարժեք քարերով և էմալապատ թանկարժեք մետաղներից պատրաստված բացառիկ մատնոցների պահանջարկը աճել է: Նախահեղափոխական Ռուսաստանում կարի այս առարկան որպես նվեր փեսան նվիրել է հարսնացուին, և ըստ մատնոցի արժեքի էլ հնարավոր է եղել գաղափար կազմել փեսայի կարողության մասին: 

Թանկարժեք մատնոցների ի հայտ գալը բերել է դրանց կոլեկցիաների առաջացման: Ի հայտ է եկել նոր հասկացություն՝ կոլեկցիոն մատնոց: Նման իրը չի օգտագործվել իր բուն նպատակի համար: 20-րդ դարում հայտնվել են հսկայական թվով բազմատեսակ մատնոցներ ճենապակուց, ոսկուց, փղոսկրից, արծաթից և այլն: 

Կարի մեքենայի հայտնագործությունը հանգեցրել է մատնոցի փառքի կտրուկ անկման, և ներկայումս այն ընդամենը կոլեկցիոն իր է, չնայած ներկայում էլ հավատարիմ ծառայություն է մատուցում դերձակներին և տնային տնտեսուհիներին:
