Լոնդոնում 1955 թվականին է լույս տեսել Գինեսի ռեկորդների գրքի առաջին հրատարակությունը մի քանի հազար օրինակ տպաքանակով, սակայն, եթե խոսենք դրա առաջացման պատմության մասին, ապա պետք է հիշել 1759 թվականը: Հենց այդ ժամանակ է Արթուր Գինեսը բացել իր առաջին գարեջրի գործարանը Դուբլին քաղաքում: «Գինես» ընկերությունը, որն արդեն 1930 թվականի վերջին Մեծ Բրիտանիայում ուներ երկու գործարան, հանդես է եկել իր գովազդային նոր նշանաբանով՝ «Գինեսը ուժ է», որի ազդեցության տակ էլ գարեջրի սիրահարները սկսել են հաճախել պանդոկներ: Գինեսի ռեկորդների գրքի պատմությունը սկսվել է որսորդների միջև վեճով: 

Դա եղել է կորպորատիվ երեկոյի ժամանակ: Հյու Բիվերը, որն այն ժամանակ այդ ընկերության ղեկավարն էր, վեճ է սկսել: Հարցն այն էր, թե որ թռչունն է ամենաարագընթացը Եվրոպայում: Բիվերը փորձել է բոլորին ապացուցել, որ միայն ոսկեգույն լորը կարող է լինել ամենաարագը: 

Բայց հակառակորդները պնդել են, որ շոտլանդական լորն ավելի արագ է: Քննարկումը երկար է շարունակվել, բայց հաղթողը չի որոշվել: 

Այնուամենայնիվ, այդ ամենը դրանով չի ավարտվել: Երեք տարի անց մեկ այլ միջոցառման ժամանակ կրկին հավաքվել են բանավիճողները, որտեղ նրանք նոր ուժգնությամբ նորից սկսել են պնդել իրենց կարծիքները: 

Դրանից հետո ներկաներից մեկն առաջարկություն է արել ստեղծել որոշակի հուսալի տեղեկատվության աղբյուր, որպեսզի գարեջրատների բոլոր այցելուները տեղեկացված լինեն ամեն ինչի մասին: Կրտսեր գարեջրագործ Կրիս Չետուեայի առաջարկությամբ երկվորյակ եղբայրներ Ռոս և Նորիս Մակուիրտերները դարձել են նման գրքի հեղինակ - հրատարակիչներ: 

Հետագայում նրանք բացել են իրենց լրատվական գործակալությունը: Գինեսի ռեկորդների առաջին գիրքը ստեղծելու համար պահանջվել է մեկ տարուց ավելի ժամանակ: 

Գիրքը, որն ունեցել է 198 էջ, առաջին անգամ ընթերցողները տեսել են 1955 թվականին: Այդ ժամանակ գրքի վերնագիրն էր «Գերմարդկանց գիրք»: Այնտեղ մուտքագրվել են «բոլոր-բոլորին» վերաբերող տվյալներ (ամենաթեթևը, ամենավատը, ամենաուժեղը, ամենախելացին և այլն): 

Ընդամենը մի քանի ամսում Բրիտանիայում գիրքը դարձել է բեսթսելեր: Գրքում սեփական անունը գրանցելու իրավունքը հասանելի է դարձել միայն սկսած 1974 թվականի վերջերից: Հենց այդ ժամանակ էլ գրանցվել է Գինեսի ռեկորդների գրքի ռեկորդային տպաքանակ՝ 23,9 միլիոն օրինակ, որը ևս գրանցվել է այդ գրքում: 1997 թվականից գիրքը կարողացել է դառնալ աշխարհում երկրորդ ամենամասսայականը (75 միլիոն օրինակ) Աստվածաշնչից հետո: 

Ներկայումս աշխարհի տարբեր երկրներ, ներառյալ Հայաստանը, ունեն հատուկ հանձնաժողովներ, որոնք իրավասու են ամրագրել նոր ռեկորդներ և տրամադրել դրանց համար համապատասխան հավաստագրեր:
