Լուսացույցների պատմությունը սկսվում է 1868 թվականի վերջերից: Հենց այդ ժամանակ է աշխարհում առաջին լուսացույցը հայտնվել Լոնդոնում՝ Մեծ Բրիտանիայի խորհրդարանի դիմաց: Այն հորինել է երկաթգծային սեմաֆորների մասնագետ Ջոն Պիկ Նայթը: Իհարկե, պետք է նշել, որ այն զգալիորեն տարբերվել է ժամանակակից լուսացույցներից և կառավարվել է ձեռքով: Սարքը բաղկացած է եղել երկու լուսաանդրադարձիչ սլաքներից: Եթե սլաքները հորիզոնական էին դասավորված, դա նշանակում էր կանգ առնել, իսկ եթե 45 աստիճանի անկյան տակ կախված էին, ապա անհրաժեշտ էր զգուշությամբ շարժվել: Իսկ երբ մթնել է, օգտագործվել են գազային լապտերներ, որոնք համապատասխանաբար ազդանշան են տվել կարմիր կամ կանաչ լույսով: Լուսացույցը գործել է միայն այն տրանսպորտային միջոցների համար, որոնք հետիոտների առկայության պարագայում ստիպված էին կանգ առնել և ճանապարհ տալ նրանց: Այնուամենայնիվ, նման սարքն իրեն այնքան էլ «լավ չի պահել», քանի որ մեկ ամիս պակաս էլ ժամանակ անց պայթել է և վնասել այն վերահսկող ոստիկանին: Առաջին ավտոմատացված լուսացույցային համակարգը 1910 թվականին ստեղծվել և արտոնագրվել է Չիկագոյում Էրնսթ Սիրինի կողմից։ 

Այս դեպքում սլաքների փոխարեն երթևեկությունը կարգավորվել է «Stop» (կանգնել) և «Proceed» (անցնել) բառերի միջոցով։ Իսկ այսօրվա լուսացույցներին շատ թե քիչ նման էլեկտրական լուսացույցն ստեղծվել է 1912 թվականին Սոլթ Լեյք Սիթիում Լեսթեր Վայրի կողմից։ Այդ լուսացույցն ունեցել է կարմիր և կանաչ էլեկտրական լամպեր։ 1920 թվականից Դեթրոյթում և Նյու Յորքում սկսել են կիրառվել եռագույն (կարմիր, դեղին, կանաչ) լուսացույցներ, որոնց գյուտարարներն են եղել Վիլյամ Փոթսը և Ջոն Հարիսը։ 

1922 թվականին նման լուսացույցներ են հայտնվել նաև Եվրոպայում (սկզբից՝ Փարիզում և Համբուրգում)։ Նախկին ԽՍՀՄ-ում առաջին լուսացույցը տեղադրվել է 1930 թվականի հունվարի 15-ին Լենինգրադում (Սանկտ Պետերբուրգ)։ Հետաքրքիր է, որ գույները, որոնք օգտագործվում են լուսացույցերում, ընտրվել են՝ հաշվի առնելով դիխրոմազիա (dichromasia-գունային տեսողության անբավարարություն) ունեցող մարդկանց կարիքները: Նման մարդիկ չեն կարողանում տարբերակել տաք (օրինակ՝ կարմիր գույնը) և սառը երանգները (օրինակ՝ կանաչը): 

Այդ իսկ պատճառով լուսացույցներում կարմիր և կանաչ գույների միջև դեղին գույնն է: Բացի այդ, կան մարդիկ՝ դալտոնիկներ, որոնք չեն տարբերում կարմիրը կանաչից, ուստի ժամանակակից լուսացույցներում ներկայումս օգտագործում են կարմիր գույնը՝ նարնջագույնի երանգով, իսկ կանաչը՝ կապույտի երանգով: 

Ներկայումս լուսացույցները կարգավորում են մարդկանց, ավտոմեքենաների, մոտոցիկլների, հեծանիվների, տրամվայների, տրոլեյբուսների, մետրոյի և երկաթգծի գնացքների, նավերի երթևեկությունը, ինչպես նաև օգտագործվում են ձեռնարկություններում դիսպետչերական ազդանշանի համար։
