Խոսելով անթերի մշակված գազոնների մասին` շատ մարդիկ դրանք ասոցացնում են Անգլիայի հետ, չնայած լավ խնամված խոտ ունեցող առաջին մարգերը, որոնք ունեն «ճիշտ ձև», առաջինը հայտնվել են Ֆրանսիայում 18-րդ դարում: Գազոնները պուրակների, ճանապարհների եզրերին առանձնացված տարածքներ են, որտեղ դեկորատիվ նպատակներով ցանված է կարճ կտրված և խնամված սիզախոտ. ֆրանսերենից թարգմանաբար gazon նշանակում է «խոտ»: Այնուամենայնիվ, հենց Անգլիայում է ստեղծվել գազոնահնձիչների թանգարան: Այնտեղ կա նաև ակումբ, որտեղ հավաքվում են այդ տեխնիկայի սիրահարները: Անգլիայում անցկացվող տարբեր մրցույթների թվում կան նույնիսկ գազոնահնձիչների մրցավազքեր: 

Գազոնահնձիչների պատմությունը սկսվել է 19-րդ դարի 30-ական թվականներից: 1830 թվականի օգոստոսի 31-ին անգլիացի Էդվին Բեարդ Բադինգը արտոնագիր է ստացել գազոնահնձիչ ստեղծելու համար: Սկզբում Բադինգը մտածել և ստեղծել էր մի սարք, որը կարողանում էր գորգի մակերեսը հարթեցնել: 

Աշխատանքի ընթացքում նա հասկացել է, որ եթե այդ սարքը դրվի անիվների վրա, ապա այն կարող է օգտագործվել խոտը հավասարաչափ բարձրությամբ հնձելու համար: Ինժեներ Ջոն Ֆերրաբին է օգնել Բադինգին ստեղծել առաջին գազոնահնձիչը և սկսել մասսայական արտադրություն: Բադինգի գազոնահնձիչի ամենավաղ մոդելը կարելի է տեսնել Լոնդոնի գիտության թանգարանում, Բրիտանիայի «Միլթոն Քայնսի» թանգարանում և Ֆերրաբի և Բադինգի հայրենիքում՝ Ստրուդ քաղաքում գտնվող թանգարանում: 

Բոլոր առաջին գազոնահնձիչները պատրաստվել են չուգունից, դրանք իրենցից ներկայացրել են երկու պտտվող գլաններ, որոնցից առաջինի վրա սայրեր կար: 

Հետևի գլանից առջևի գլանին ռոտացիան փոխանցվել է չուգունե ատամնանիվների միջոցով: Բադինգը և Ֆերրաբին թույլ են տվել բոլոր նրանց, ովքեր ստացել են արտոնագիր, արտադրել գազոնահնձիչների իրենց պատճենները: Մեծ հաջողության է հասել Անգլիայի Իպսվիչ քաղաքի Ransomes ընկերությունը, որը 1832 թվականից սկսել է գազոնահնձիչներ արտադրել: 

Այդ ժամանակվանից մինչ օրս այս ընկերությունը այգեգործական սարքավորումների ամենահայտնի արտադրողներից մեկն է: Առաջին գազոնահնձիչները աշխատել են ձիաուժով: 1870 թվականին ամերիկացի Էլվուդ Մաք Գերը մի այնպիսի գազոնահնձիչ է ստեղծել, որն արդեն նախատեսված է եղել մարդկային ուժով օգտագործելու համար: 1890 թվականին հայտնվել են շարժիչային գազոնահնձիչները, որոնք արդեն աշխատել են բենզինի կամ գոլորշու շարժիչով: 

Սկզբում շատ տարածված են եղել շոգեշարժիչային գազոնահնձիչները, բայց շուտով սպառողների համար պարզ է դարձել, որ դրանք ավելի շատ ժամանակ են պահանջում աշխատանքների նախապատրաստման համար, քան բուն հնձելու գործընթացն է: Իսկ արդեն 1900 թվականին բենզինով աշխատող սարքերը դարձել են գերակշռող: 

1920-30-ական թվականներից սկսել են արտադրել էլեկտրական գազոնահնձիչներ, բայց դրանք պահանջված են դարձել շատ ավելի ուշ: Գազոնահնձիչների զարգացման պատմության մեջ հսկայական քայլ է կատարվել 1950 թվականին, քանի որ այդ թվականից այգեգործության այդ սարքավորումը դարձել է բավականին հուսալի և էժան: Հետագայում դրանք էլ ավելի են էժանացել շնորհիվ 1960-ականներին արտադրության մեջ պլաստմասսայի օգտագործման:
