Հաշվի առնելով հնէաբանական գտածոները՝ կարելի է հաստատապես պնդել, որ կարելու ասեղների պատմությունը սկսվել է շատ վաղուց, քանի որ դրանք օգտագործել են դեռ մեր դարաշրջանից առաջ ապրող մարդիկ մոտ 40 000 տարի առաջ: Այնուամենայնիվ, անհայտ է, թե ովքեր են դրանք սկզբնապես հայտնագործել և ստեղծել, բայց կան ապացույցներ այն մասին, թե երբ և որտեղ են հայտնվել կարելու առաջին մետաղական ասեղները, չնայած մինչ այդ դրանք ոսկորից են պատրաստվել: Հնէաբանները Եվրոպայում մետաղից պատրաստված ամենահին ասեղներ հայտնաբերել են Բավարիայի Մանչինգին տարածքում:

Հաստատվել է, որ դրանց արտադրության ժամանակաշրջանը թվագրվում է մ.թ.ա. 3-րդ դարով: Այնուամենայնիվ, չի բացառվում, որ այդ ասեղները պարզապես բերվել են այդտեղ, այլ ոչ թե արտադրվել են տեղում: Այդ ժամանակվա կարի ասեղի ականջակը ամբողջովին տարբերվել է ժամանակակից ասեղների ականջակից (մեզ համար դա թելելու սովորական անցք է): Բանն այն է, որ պարզապես ասեղի բութ ծայրը կորացվել է և դրանով իսկ ձևավորվել է շրջան, որի մեջ էլ անցկացվել է թելը: Իսկ ընդհանրապես, մետաղից պատրաստված կարելու առաջին ասեղը հայտնաբերվել է Չինաստանում: Այն թվագրված է մ.թ.ա. 10-րդ դարով: Գոյություն ունի երկու վարկած, թե ինչպես են այդ ասեղները հասել Եվրոպա:

Ըստ մեկ վարկածի, դրանք 8-րդ դարում ներկրվել են մավրիտանական ցեղերի կողմից, իսկ ըստ մյուս վարկածի, արաբական առևտրականները ասեղները Եվրոպա են բերել 4-րդ դարում: Ասեղների պատմության մեջ կարևոր իրադարձություն է եղել դամասկոսյան պողպատի գյուտը, հենց այդ ժամանակից էլ հայտնվել են նոր սերնդի ասեղները: Եվրոպայում կարելու ասեղների առաջին արտադրությունը ստեղծվել է 1370 թվականին, որի ժամանակ սկսել են արտադրել առանց ականջների ասեղներ: Դրանք պատրաստվել են դարբինների կողմից ձեռքի աշխատանքով:

Կարելու ասեղների արտադրությունը ծավալով աճել է այն բանից հետո, երբ Եվրոպայում 12-րդ դարում մետաղալար ստանալու համար սկսել են օգտագործել գլանումը: 16-րդ դարում (Գերմանիայում) մետաղալարերի ստացման մեթոդը մեխանիզացվել է (դա հնարավոր է դարձել հիդրավլիկ շարժիչի օգնությամբ), և արդյունքում հեղափոխություն է տեղի ունենում կարելու ասեղների արտադրության մեջ:

Այդ ժամանակ ասեղների հիմնական արտադրողները եղել են Գերմանիայում (Նյուրնբերգ), ինչպես նաև Իսպանիայում: 1556 թվականին, արդյունաբերական հեղափոխության գալուստով, Անգլիայում ևս հայտնվել են ասեղներ արտադրող ձեռնարկություններ: Արդյունաբերական արտադրությունը բերել է ասեղների գների անկման, ինչն էլ իր հերթին այն ավելի մատչելի ապրանք է դարձրել, քանի որ մինչ այդ դերձակը կարող էր ունենալ ընդամենը 1-2 ասեղ և ոչ ավելին:

Անգլիայում հաստոցների ստեղծումը (1850 թվական) հնարավորություն է տվել մեր աչքի համար սովորական ականջներով ասեղներ արտադրել, և դա եղել է հեղափոխություն կարելու ասեղների պատմության մեջ, և Անգլիան դարձել է մենաշնորհային այդ արտադրանքի արտադրության մեջ: 17-րդ դարում կարելու ասեղները Ռուսաստան են ներմուծել գինզեյական վաճառականները: Իսկ մինչ դա դերձակները ստիպված են եղել օգտագործել պղնձե և բրոնզե ասեղներ:

Արծաթե ասեղներ ևս եղել են, բայց միայն հարուստներն են ունեցել դրանցից: Իսկ ահա ոսկուց ասեղներ չեն պատրաստել այդ մետաղի փափկության պատճառով: Ռուսաստանում ասեղների արդյունաբերական արտադրությունը սկսվել է 1717 թվականից: Պետրոս Մեծի հրամանով ասեղների արտադրության երկու գործարան է կառուցվել Կոլենցի և Ստոլբցսի (Ռյազանի շրջան) գյուղերում:
