Խորհրդարանը մեկ րոպե լռությամբ հարգեց 1988թ. դեկտեմբերի 7-ի աղետալի երկրաշարժի զոհերի հիշատակը: «Արմենպրես»-ի հաղորդմամբ՝ նման առաջարկով հանդես եկավ ԱԺ նախագահ Գալուստ Սահակյանը: «Խնդրում եմ մեկ րոպե լռությամբ հարգել 1988թ. դեկտեմբերի 7-ի աղետալի երկրաշարժի զոհերի հիշատակը»,-նշեց Սահակյանը: Պատգամավորները հոտնկայս մեկ րոպե լռությամբ հարգեցին զոհերի հիշատակը:
Սպիտակի ահեղ երկրաշարժն ուղիղ 27 տարի առաջ խախտեց Հայաստան աշխարհի անդորրը: 1988թ. դեկտեմբերի 7-ին` տեղական ժամանակով ժամը 11:41 րոպեին, Հայաստանի մոտ 40 տոկոսը ընդգրկող տարածքում տեղի ունեցավ էպիկենտրոնում 10 բալ ուժգնությամբ ավերիչ երկրաշարժ: Հաշված վայրկյանների ընթացքում լրիվ կամ մասնակի ավերվեցին Սպիտակ, Լենինական, Կիրովական, Ստեփանավան քաղաքները, Սպիտակի, Ախուրյանի, Գուգարքի, Արագածի, Կալինինոյի, Ստեփանավանի շրջանների հարյուրից ավելի գյուղեր ու բնակավայրեր։ Զոհվեց 25 հազարից ավելի մարդ, 500 հազարը մնաց անօթևան։ Շարքից դուրս եկավ բնակÖ �ոնդի 17 տոկոսը` շուրջ 8 միլիոն քառակուսի մետր բնակելի տարածություն։ Երկրաշարժի հետեւանքով լրիվ կամ մասամբ ավերվեցին ավելի քան 230 արդյունաբերական օբյեկտներ՝ 82 հազար աշխատատեղով։ Հայաստանի տնտեսությանը հասցված վնասը կազմեց 13 միլիարդ ռուբլի։
