Ֆաստֆուդը (անգլերեն՝ fast «արագ» և food «սնունդ») հանրային սննդի պատրաստման և օգտագործման վրա ծախսվող քիչ ժամանակի տրամադրմամբ, պարզեցված սպասքով կամ առանց դրա, սեղանի շուրջ կամ առանց սեղանի սնվելու տարատեսակ է: Ֆաստֆուդի առավելությունը պատրաստման ու օգտագործման արագությունն ու էժանությունն է: Մի կողմից՝ դա իր արձագանքն է գտնում սպառողի մոտ (հատկապես կյանքի հագեցած ռիթմ ունեցող խոշոր քաղաքներում), մյուս կողմից՝ այսպիսի սնունդը պարզ և խնայողական եղանակով է պատրաստվում, ինչը նման ցանցերին թույլ է տալիս արագ զարգանալ:

Ոչ պակաս կարևոր դեր է խաղում նաև գովազդը տարբեր մեթոդներով: Իսկ ե՞րբ և ինչպե՞ս է առաջացել հանրային սննդի այս տարատեսակը: Աշխարհի տարբեր երկրների խոհանոցներում գոյություն ունեն արագ պատրաստվող ճաշատեսակներ (օրինակ՝ իտալական պիցցա): 1921 թվականին Կանզասում բացվել է White Castle ընկերությունը, որի ֆիրմային ուտեստն այն ժամանակ դեռևս արտասովոր համբուրգերներն էին: Կայուն գինը (ընդհուպ մինչև 1946 թվականը 5 ցենտ էր) և արտասովոր լինելը գրավում էին գնորդներին: 1940-ական թվականների վերջում White Castle ընկերության համար մրցակիցներ են հայտնվել, որոնցից ամենալուրջը դարձել է «ՄաքԴոնալդսը»: Հոնկոնգյան չխաչխանտխենները ասիական արագ սպասարկման ռեստորանների տարատեսակներ են, որոնք առաջացել են 1950-ական թվականներին:

Այս հաստատություններում մատուցում են ճաշատեսակներ, որոնք իրենց մեջ ներառում են չինական և եվրոպական գծեր, մասնավորապես՝ յուանյան (թեյի, սուրճի և խտացրած կաթի խառնուրդ), արագ պատրաստվող արիշտայով և խոզապուխտով ապուր, ինչպես նաև սենդվիչների բազմաթիվ տեսակներ: «ՄաքԴոնալդսի» ցանցը բավականին արագ է զարգացել, որը և տարածել է ֆաստֆուդը ամբողջ աշխարհում: Օրինակ՝ 1956 թվականին ԱՄՆ-ում եղել է «ՄաքԴոնալդսի» 14 ռեստորան, 1960 թվականին՝ 228, 1968 թվականին՝ 1000, 1975 թվականին՝ 3076, 1980 թվականին՝ 6263, 1984 թվականին՝ 8300, 1990 թվականին՝ 11800:

Այժմ այդ կորպորացիան աշխարհի 119 երկրում ունի ավելի քան 30 հազար հաստատություն: Ներկայիս ֆաստֆուդի սրճարանների արագ պատրաստվող կերակրատեսակներից կարելի է նշել համբուրգերը, սենդվիչը, հոթ դոգը, քորնդոգերը, պիցցան, սամսան, շաուրման, քաբաբը, բուրիտոն, նրբաբլիթը, ֆալաֆելը, կարտոֆիլային ֆրին և այլն: Վերջում կարելի է նշել, որ ցանցային արագ սննդի մեջ լայնորեն կիրառվող կիսաֆաբրիկատները, ինչպես և «գործարանային» արտադրության այլ ուտելիքը, կարող են պարունակել տարատեսակ սննդային հավելումներ, որոնց մեծ մասը բացասաբար է ազդում օրգանիզմի վիճակի և ինչպես երեխաների, այնպես էլ մեծահասակների առողջության վրա: Այն մարդիկ, ովքեր կանոնավոր կերպով օգտվում են արագ սննդից, ժամանակի ընթացքում ունենում են ավիտամինոզ, գիրություն և այլն:
