Ժամանակն է, որ Եվրևոպական Միությունը ներկայանա ընդդեմ Թուրքիայի նախագահ Ռեջեփ Թայիփ Էրդողանի, որի հանցավոր գործունեությունը երկրի ներսում եւ դրա սահմաններից դուրս գործողությունները ներկայացնում են մեծ սպառնալիք: Այդ մասին Modern Diplomacy պարբերականում գրում է Նյու Յորքի համալսարանի Համաշխարհային հարաբերությունների կենտրոնի միջազգային հարաբերությունների պրոֆեսոր Ալոն Բեն Մեյրը:
Նա նշում է, որ Էրդողանը պարբերաբար շանտաժի է ենթարկում ԵՄ-ին, աջակցում է ծայրահեղական իսլամիստական խմբավորումներին, ինչպիսիք են «Մուսուլման եղբայրները» եւ ՀԱՄԱՍ-ը, եւ ապակայունացնում բազմաթիվ երկրներ:
Մարտին Թուրքիան հայտարարել էր, որ այլեւս չի խոչընդոտի փախստականների տեղաշարժին դեպի հարեւան Հունաստան, իսկ Էրդողանը նախազգուշացրել էր, որ միլիոնավոր միգրանտներ եւ փախստականներ առաջիկայում կուղղվեն դեպի Եվրոպա:
Թուրքիան պահպանում է ռազմական ներկայությունը Սիրիայում եւ Իրաքում՝ հղում անելով քրդական զինված խմբավորումներին, որոնք գործում են Մերձավոր Արեւելքում եւ գտնվում ռազմական գործողություններ իրականացնելու վիճակում: Անկարան նաեւ մեղադրվում է Սիրիայից ահաբեկիչների զարգացման մեջ Լիբիայում ազգային համաձայնության կառավարության միջազգային ճանաչման համար: «Էրդողանի վարքի մանրակրկիտ ուսումնասիրությունը հստակ ցույց է տալիս նրա ձգտումը վերականգնել Օսմանյան կայսրության ազդեցության մեծ մասը երկրներում, որոնք ժամանակին գտնվել են դրա վերահսկողության տակ»,-գրում է վերլուծաբանը:
Սակայն ԵՄ-ն որոշել է համոզել ինքն իրեն, որ Թուրքիան շատ կարեւոր է աշխարհառազմավարական տեսանկյունից, ինչով Թուրքիայի իշխանատենչ առաջնորդը հմտորեն օգտվում է: Հեղինակը համարում է, որ Էրդողանին հաղթելն ավելի հեշտ կլինի ԱՄՆ նախագահի թեկնածու Ջո Բայդենի հաղթանակից հետո, որն, անկասկած, կամրապնդի ԵՄ-ի հետ համագործակցությունը եւ վերջ կտա ավտորիտարիզմին: Բադենը պաշտոնապես անվանել է Թուրքիայի նախագահի ավտոկրատ, ընդ որում՝ հայտնելով իր վճռականությունը Թուրքիայի ընդդիմադրությանը սատարելու հարցում:
