1996 թ.-ից ԱԳՆ-ում աշխատող Այվազյանն դիվանագիտական կորպուսի թերևս ամենահեղինակազուրկ կադրերից է:
Նա Արգենտինայում ՀՀ դեսպան է նշանակվել բարերար Էդուրարդո Էռնեկյանին քծնելու և այդ պահին գործող դեսպանի դեմ վարկաբեկիչ զեկուցագրեր գրելու արդյունքում, որոնք հետագայում մոռացել է ջնջել համակարգչից՝ ծաղրի առարկա դառնալով ԱԳՆ-ում:
Դեսպան եղած ժամանակ Արա Այվազյանը զբաղվել է դիվանագիտական պետհամարանիշներով մեքենաների առքուվաճառքով, բայց սա նրա կենսագրության ամենախայտառակ դրվագը չէ: Ապրիլի 23-ին՝ Ցեղասպանության տարելիցի նախօրեին, նա ընդունելով Արգենտինայում Թուրքիայի դեսպանի հրավերը, առանց որևէ մեկին պահելու, գնացել է Թուրքիայի դեսպանի հետ գինի խմելու և մեկնարկած ջահերով երթի պատճառով տևական ժամանակ չի կարողացել դուրս գալ Թուրքիայի դեսպանատնից:
Մեկ այլ խայտառակ դրվագ էլ կա. Արա Այվազյանի վարորդը հափշտակել է ՀՀ դեսպանության սեյֆում եղած կանխիկ դրամական միջոցները ու թեև բոլորը գիտեին նրա գտնվելու վայրը, սակայն ոչինչ չձեռնարկվեց հանցագործին պատժելու համար, քանի որ նա Ավյազյանների ընտանիքի մտերիմն էր:
Նա բացարձակ չի տիրապետում ղարաբաղյան բանակցությունների ո՜չ պատմությանը, ո՜չ էլ ընթացքին:
