ՀՀ արտաքին գործերի նախարարի պաշտոնում Արա Այվազյանի նշանակումը շատերի, մեղմ ասած, տարակուսանքին ու քննադատությանն արժանացավ. մեծամասնության կարծիքով, նշանակվել է դիվանագիտական կորպուսի ամենաթույլ կադրերից մեկը: Մեր աղբյուրների փոխանցմամբ, համակարգում վստահ են, որ Այվազյանը, բացի լավ դեսպան լինելուց, որևէ այլ քաղաքական, բովանդակային, որակական, մտավոր պոտենցիալ չի դրսևորել, առավել ևս, բացարձակ անծանոթ է արցախյան բանակցային գործընթացին:

«Փաստ» թերթի տեղեկություններով, Արա Այվազյանի՝ Մոսկվա կատարած առաջին աշխատանքային այցը հարթ չի անցել: ՌԴ ԱԳՆ մեր աղբյուրները հայտնում են, որ նորանշանակ նախարարը շահագրգռված է եղել ոչ միայն ու ոչ այնքան Արցախի շուրջ ստեղծված դրամատիկ զարգացումներում հանգուցալուծումներ գտնելու հարցում, որքան Ռուսաստանի իշխանական շրջանակներում Նիկոլ Փաշինյանի իմիջի վերականգնման աշխատանքներում, մասնավորաբար համոզելու, որ նոյեմբերի 9-ից հետո ստեղծված վիճակում միայն Փաշինյանը կարող է հայ-ռուսական հարաբերությունների երաշխավոր լինել:
