Գիտության, տեխնոլոգիաների ու մաթեմատիկայի ոլորտում մարդիկ ավելի շատ են, քան կանայք: Այդ պատճառով տղամարդիկ մտածում են, որ իրենք ավելի են հակված այս գիտություններին: Սակայն, ինչպես ցույց տվեց Washington State University համալսարանի նոր հետազոտությունը, դա այդքան էլ այդպես չէ: Տղամարդկանց մեծամասնությունը, ի տարբերություն կանանց, գերագնահատում է մաթեմատիկայի ոլորտում իր ունակությունները, սակայն հենց այդ ինքնավստահությունն է, որ ստիպում է նրանց զբաղվել ճշգրիտ գիտություններով:

Հետազոտության շրջանակներում գիտնականները 122 ուսանողներին եւ 184 կամավորներին առաջարկել են մաթեմատիկական թեստ անցնել, իսկ այնուհետեւ կռահել, ինչ արդյունքներ նրանք կարձանագրեն: Պարզվեց, որ, չնայած տղամարդկանց ու կանանց շրջանում արդյունքները մոտավորապես նույնն էին, տղամարդիկ գերագնահատում էին իրենց աշխատանքներն ու ավելի լավ արդյունքներ էին ակնկալում: Իսկ ահա կանայք բավականին սթափ էին գնահատում իրենց հնարավորություններն ու ավելի ճշգրիտ էին արդյունքները կանխատեսելու գործում:

Նույն այդ մարդկանց շրջանում հարցումը ցույց տվեց, որ մաթեմատիկայով ու գիտությամբ զբաղվելու ցանկություն ունեցող մարդկանց թիվը տղամարդկանց շրջանում ավելի մեծ է՝ կանանց համեմատ: Սակայն հետազոտության հեղինակները հույս ունեն, որ իրենց աշխատանքը կարող է ավելի շատ կանանց ընդգրկել գիտության ու մաթեմատիկայի ոլորտում:

Ինչպես նշեց Թամարա Հաջինսը՝ գիտությամբ զբաղվելու ցանկություն հայտնած աղջիկներին աջակցող Girlstart նախագծի ղեկավարը, այս ոլորտում կանանց թվի ավելացումը իր բազմաթիվ դրական կողմերն ունի, քանի որ կանայք եւս կարող են բացահայտումներ անել ու նպաստել երկրի տնտեսության զարգացմանը:
